Sudanese Military Claims Victory, Breaks RSF Siege of Dilling
Sudan’s military announced on Monday that it has successfully broken a siege imposed by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the town of Dilling in the central Kordofan region. This development comes amid the ongoing civil war that has engulfed the country since April 2023, marking a significant moment in the conflict.
In an official statement, the military declared that it has opened a route leading to Dilling, which the RSF has sought to control for several months. The successful operation is crucial, as holding Dilling allows access to major supply lines. The military reported that their forces inflicted “heavy losses on the enemy, both personal and equipment,” although no immediate response has been issued by the RSF regarding this claim.
The conflict in Sudan escalated dramatically in April 2023 when a power struggle between the military and the RSF erupted into open violence in the capital, Khartoum, and other regions. The ongoing fighting has resulted in the deaths of over 40,000 people, according to estimates from the United Nations (U.N.). Humanitarian organizations suggest the actual toll could be significantly higher. This conflict has led to what is now considered the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, displacing over 14 million people and pushing parts of the country into famine conditions.
The situation in Dilling has been dire, with reports of severe hunger affecting the local population. However, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification did not classify the area as experiencing famine in its November report due to insufficient data.
Since losing its stronghold in Khartoum in 2025, the RSF has redirected its focus toward Kordofan and the city of el-Fasher, which was previously held by the military until its capture by the RSF in October. The ongoing struggle for control in these regions continues to exacerbate the humanitarian crisis, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence and instability.
As the military claims this recent victory, the broader implications for the conflict remain uncertain. The situation in Sudan is fluid, with both sides vying for control over strategic locations and resources, while the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution to the escalating violence.
