Texans’ Anderson and Al-Shaair Foster Bond Through Faith and Football
In a remarkable display of camaraderie, Houston Texans defensive end Will Anderson Jr. and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair have formed a profound friendship that transcends their differing religious backgrounds. As they prepare to face the Pittsburgh Steelers on January 15, 2024, in the postseason, their relationship, rooted in faith, demonstrates a powerful narrative of unity in diversity within the world of professional football.
Anderson, a devout Christian, and Al-Shaair, who follows Islam, have leveraged their shared commitment to spirituality to strengthen their bond both on and off the field. “I’m a Christian through and through, but I also think it’s very important to see how other people think and feel about certain things,” Anderson explained. Al-Shaair echoed this sentiment, stating, “I’m open about my faith, and I use my faith and the things I’ve experienced in conversations with guys and the same for him. Every time we talked, we were always hitting on the same cylinder.”
As team captains, they prioritize moments of quiet reflection before games. These private discussions serve as a grounding force amid the chaos of game day. Anderson, who recently earned a first-team AP All-Pro designation, and Al-Shaair, selected for his first Pro Bowl and currently leading the team with 103 tackles, aim to secure Houston’s first road playoff victory.
Anderson credits Al-Shaair with providing steady encouragement since his arrival in Houston last season. Their pregame conversations are particularly meaningful, creating a shared mindset that enhances their performance. “I could truly say our talks before the game really help me,” Anderson said. “We try not to miss that talk before the game, and that really helps both of us just get in that mindset.”
Despite the fundamental differences in their beliefs, they recognize common values that unite them. “Although Azeez is a Muslim and I’m Christian, we share a lot of the same similarities with our faith and our morals and beliefs,” Anderson noted. Their discussions often revolve around the importance of treating others with respect and kindness, highlighting their shared ethical framework.
Both players draw strength from their faith, sharing personal stories that illustrate how spirituality aids them in navigating challenges, especially the physical demands of football. “Just about trusting God, believing in God, and knowing it’s God’s timing,” Anderson said. “Whether it’s a story from the Quran or a story from the Bible, it really doesn’t matter because we’re both sharing our faith.”
The depth of their friendship was further illustrated when both were announced as Pro Bowl selections this season. In separate interviews, they expressed that the honor held greater significance because they share it and because of their faith-based relationship. Al-Shaair remarked, “It’s like we’re literally just kind of in each other’s brains.”
Al-Shaair, who grew up mostly in Florida, has fostered relationships with Christians throughout his life, while Anderson, raised Baptist in suburban Atlanta, had less exposure to Islamic culture until meeting Ali Gaye during training for the NFL combine. Anderson finds value in the insights gained from his discussions with Al-Shaair, noting, “I didn’t know any Muslims growing up,” and he appreciates the opportunity to learn.
Al-Shaair has observed that many Muslims are knowledgeable about Christianity, while the reverse is not often true. “When you talk about faith, it’s almost funny because I tell people there are a lot of Muslims that know a lot about the Bible, and not a lot of Christians that know anything about Islam other than the Islamophobic propaganda,” he said.
Their relationship has offered Al-Shaair a chance to deepen his faith. “In Islam, it’s actually encouraged to learn about other religions, other faiths, so it should reinforce your belief in your own,” he explained. The duo’s open dialogue has allowed them to learn from one another, creating a rich tapestry of shared understanding.
Throughout their time together, they have supported each other during difficult moments, including Al-Shaair’s suspension last season for an illegal hit on Jacksonville quarterback Trevor Lawrence. During that challenging period, Al-Shaair faced online abuse, which, combined with the suspension, placed him in a difficult emotional state. Anderson observed how Al-Shaair relied on his faith for strength during this time, expressing pride in his friend’s resilience and growth.
“In religion and faith, everything comes with pain and suffering,” Anderson noted. “The world can persecute you, the world can say all this stuff about you, and look where God has brought him this year.” Al-Shaair has not only returned to the field but has also been recognized for his achievements, earning the Walter Payton Man of the Year award for his contributions on and off the field.
Reflecting on his journey, Al-Shaair attributes his success to his faith. “It’s been the number one reason I was able to get over the hump and go through all that adversity,” he said. “I’m better now than I was even before all that happened, and I think that’s the biggest blessing.”
As they navigate life in a divisive society, Anderson and Al-Shaair hope their relationship can inspire others to embrace understanding and compassion. “If you just have compassion and are able to not be so stuck in your own head and your own mindset, and open up your heart, you’ll realize we’re a lot more similar than we are different,” Al-Shaair concluded.
Through their faith-based bond, these young athletes are not only contributing to their team’s success but are also exemplifying the power of unity and understanding in a world that often highlights differences. As they prepare for their upcoming postseason challenge, their inspiring friendship serves as a reminder of the potential for connection across divides.
