Thai Prime Minister Addresses Flooding Crisis as Death Toll Reaches 162
Severe flooding in southern Thailand has resulted in at least 162 confirmed deaths and affected over 3.8 million individuals, prompting a response from the government. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul acknowledged failures in flood management while announcing recovery and compensation plans during a press conference on March 15, 2024.
The flooding, which began last weekend, has devastated 12 provinces, with the hardest-hit areas in Songkhla Province, where 126 fatalities have been reported. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation stated that more than 1.4 million households have been impacted. In light of the disaster, government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat confirmed the rising death toll during a news briefing in Bangkok.
In his address, Anutin expressed regret for the government’s inability to safeguard the population. “I apologize to the people that the government was unable to take care and protect them,” he stated. He outlined compensation payments that will begin next week for those affected, along with additional relief measures including debt suspension and interest-free loans for businesses and home repairs.
As recovery efforts progressed, water levels started to recede in the affected provinces. Residents returned to their homes to assess the damage, revealing scattered furniture and personal belongings amidst the destruction. The floods disrupted lives significantly, stranding thousands, obstructing roads, and submerging low-rise buildings and vehicles.
In Songkhla, particularly in its largest city, Hat Yai, rescue operations continued to uncover additional victims as access to previously submerged residential areas improved. The situation remains dire, with ongoing efforts to locate missing individuals.
In a gesture of support, King Maha Vajiralongkorn pledged 100 million baht (approximately $3.11 million) to Hat Yai Hospital, which sustained significant damage due to the flooding. The King also announced that royal support would be provided for the funerals of all victims.
This tragic event has stirred public criticism towards the government’s disaster response, highlighting the urgent need for effective flood management strategies in the future. As recovery efforts unfold, the focus remains on helping those impacted rebuild their lives and communities.
