Truck Collision in Northeastern Egypt Claims 18 Lives
A tragic road collision occurred on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of 18 individuals in northeastern Egypt. The accident involved a truck and a pickup truck on the 30 June Axis, located south of Port Said, around 12:30 p.m. According to officials from the Labor Ministry, the victims were fishermen traveling to work at local fish farms when the collision took place.
The pickup truck was reportedly transporting workers from the town of Matareya in Dakahlia province. Initial reports indicate that the exact circumstances leading to the collision remain unclear. Eyewitness accounts and photographs shared on social media illustrate the severe aftermath, with images showing the pickup truck crushed between two large cargo trucks and debris strewn across the highway.
Government Response and Safety Concerns
In response to this devastating incident, Egyptian Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. He ordered immediate monetary assistance for those affected by the tragedy. Furthermore, the governor of Port Said visited the crash site and local hospitals to oversee medical care for the injured and to ensure that traffic was restored to normal.
This incident highlights the ongoing issue of road safety in Egypt, where traffic accidents claim thousands of lives annually. Factors contributing to this alarming trend include speeding, poorly maintained roads, and inadequate enforcement of traffic regulations. The country has struggled with transportation safety for years, leading to calls for improved measures to protect its citizens on the road.
As investigations into the collision continue, the community mourns the loss of those killed, while many others reflect on the urgent need for enhanced road safety initiatives.
