In a significant military operation, the United States successfully captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro after months of mounting pressure. President Donald Trump ordered the covert mission into Venezuela, intending to bring Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, back to the U.S. for prosecution on charges of narco-terrorism.

The operation unfolded early on a Saturday morning, with Trump revealing details during an interview on “Fox and Friends Weekend.” According to the President, Maduro was located in a heavily fortified palace, described as a “fortress.” U.S. forces reportedly encountered no resistance significant enough to thwart their plans, as Maduro was unable to reach a designated safe room.

Trump detailed that American forces were equipped with “massive blowtorches” to breach steel barriers if necessary. He explained, “He didn’t get that space closed. He was trying to get into it, but he got bum-rushed right so fast that he didn’t get into that. We were prepared.” The operation included extensive rehearsal, with a replica of Maduro’s palace constructed for training purposes.

Covert Operation in Caracas

The mission took place under the cover of darkness, with Trump claiming that U.S. forces turned off nearly all the lights in Caracas. Seven explosions were reported during the less-than-thirty-minute operation, which aimed to ensure a swift and effective capture. Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez announced that the operation resulted in civilian and military casualties, although specific figures were not disclosed.

Trump mentioned that a few U.S. personnel were injured, but he confirmed that no American lives were lost during the mission. “A couple of guys were hit, but they came back and they’re supposed to be in pretty good shape,” he stated. He also noted that a helicopter involved in the operation sustained significant damage.

The President explained that the U.S. had delayed the operation for days, waiting for favorable weather conditions. “We waited four days,” Trump said, emphasizing the meticulous planning involved. Once the weather improved, the order was given to proceed.

Legal Consequences and Escalating Tensions

Following the capture, Maduro and Flores were transported to a U.S. warship, with plans to bring them to New York for trial. The U.S. Justice Department has indicted both for their alleged involvement in a narco-terrorism conspiracy, signalling a severe escalation in U.S. actions against the Venezuelan regime.

This operation marks a dramatic shift from previous military actions in the region, which included targeted strikes against vessels linked to drug trafficking activities. Since early September 2023, the U.S. military has conducted at least 35 strikes, resulting in over 115 casualties, primarily targeting drug-carrying boats in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific.

On December 29, Trump announced a successful strike on a facility used by Venezuelan drug cartels, which involved a drone operation orchestrated by the CIA. This incident represents the first known direct military engagement on Venezuelan soil since the U.S. expanded its operations in the region in September.

As the U.S. government prepares to prosecute Maduro, the implications of this operation are likely to reverberate through both American and Venezuelan political landscapes, raising concerns over the future of U.S.-Venezuelan relations.
