US-Israel Strikes Target Iran: A Complex Military Operation Unfolds

The recent strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran could lead to an extended military operation with multifaceted strategic goals. Initiated on Saturday, these operations aim to significantly weaken Iran’s military capabilities and disrupt its leadership structure. Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, Israel’s army chief, emphasized that this military campaign is “unfolding on a completely different scale, more complex and more complicated” than previous actions taken in June 2022.

During the June conflict, Israel, with American backing, focused on targeted strikes against key Iranian nuclear facilities. In contrast, the current campaign involves a broader scope, as indicated by Iranian officials. Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, described US and Israeli installations as “legitimate targets,” shortly before Iran’s state television reported renewed missile attacks on US bases in the Gulf.

David Khalfa, co-founder of the Atlantic Middle East Forum research center, characterized this military initiative as a “large-scale military campaign” that could last “several days, or even several weeks.” He referred to the attacks as a “multi-domain offensive” aimed not only at disrupting the regime’s command structure but also at provoking an internal transition or even regime change within Iran.

Targeting Key Iranian Leadership

The joint US-Israeli strikes specifically targeted high-ranking officials within Iran, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, the Chief of Staff, and the head of the Revolutionary Guards. These actions also included operations against Iran’s ballistic missile program. Khalfa described the campaign as an “all-out decapitation campaign,” aimed at undermining the state’s security architecture and governance. Sanam Vakil, director of the Middle East and North Africa programme at Chatham House, stated that this conflict represents an existential threat to the Iranian regime, suggesting that it is unlikely to conclude swiftly.

Despite the escalating tensions, Araghchi attempted to mitigate fears of further conflict by clarifying that Iran has “no intention of attacking” Gulf nations but views US bases on their territory as “an act of self-defense.” He expressed interest in de-escalation, indicating a willingness to communicate with Washington despite the current lack of dialogue.

Risks of Regional Escalation

The potential for the conflict to widen is significant. Khalfa noted that Iran is already engaging in “horizontal escalation,” which could lead to targeting American bases across the Arabian-Persian Gulf and even striking Israel directly. He raised concerns that regional Arab nations might permit US military operations from their territories, or even join the conflict themselves, perceiving Iranian actions as crossing critical boundaries.

Furthermore, Iranian proxies, including Hezbollah, have called for regional solidarity against what they describe as “aggression” towards Iran. Concerns are mounting that the United States could become further entangled in a conflict without a clear resolution, as articulated by Brandan Buck, a researcher at the Washington-based Cato Institute. He warned that President Donald Trump is echoing past strategic miscalculations by promising limited military engagement while inadvertently setting the stage for a prolonged conflict.

As the situation develops, the international community is closely monitoring the implications of this military campaign, which poses significant risks not only to regional stability but also to global security dynamics.
