College of the Rockies Launches Gasfitter Class B Level 2 Program
Beginning in January 2026, the College of the Rockies (COTR) will introduce the Gasfitter Class B Level 2 program to enhance its trades training offerings. This new program aims to meet the growing demand for skilled gasfitters in the Kootenay region of British Columbia, where steady employment opportunities continue to arise.
According to Ranjan Bhattacharya, Dean of Trades and Technology at COTR, the shift to recognizing Gasfitter – Class B as a Red Seal trade in January 2025 mandates that individuals entering the field must obtain both a Certificate of Qualification with a Red Seal endorsement from SkilledTradesBC and a Certificate of Qualification from Technical Safety BC. “Our program provides the 10 weeks of technical training required for students to be eligible to write the Technical Safety BC Certificate of Qualification exam,” Bhattacharya stated.
Program Details and Career Opportunities
The Gasfitter Class B trade involves the design, installation, repair, and maintenance of propane and natural gas systems across various settings, including residential, commercial, and industrial environments. This career path is particularly suitable for individuals with strong mathematical skills, the ability to maintain composure under pressure, and a commitment to safety and accuracy.
Those who have completed the provincial Plumber Apprenticeship program at COTR or another institution will receive credit for 1,500 of the required 3,000 workplace hours, along with Level 1 technical training in Gasfitting. Additionally, learners who have already completed the Gasfitter Class B Level 1 program will be eligible to enroll in Level 2 starting in January.
Application Process and Future Prospects
The Gasfitter Class B Level 2 program promises to open doors for tradespeople seeking to broaden their expertise. With the potential for stable employment across multiple sectors, including residential, commercial, and industrial, this training also offers enhanced flexibility when paired with plumbing or HVAC training.
Applications for the Gasfitter Class B Level 2 program are currently open, inviting interested candidates to learn more at cotr.bc.ca/gasfitter. The expansion of this program underscores COTR’s commitment to addressing the skills gap in the region and preparing students for successful careers in a crucial trade.
