Zelensky to Discuss Peace Negotiations with European Leaders

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to meet with European allies in London on Monday, following critical remarks from former US President Donald Trump. Trump expressed disappointment that Zelensky had not reviewed a US proposal aimed at ending the ongoing conflict with Russia. This meeting comes after a series of discussions between Ukrainian and US officials in Miami, which concluded without a significant breakthrough on Saturday. Zelensky has committed to continued negotiations in hopes of establishing peace.

In London, Zelensky will engage with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and French President Emmanuel Macron to further discuss the peace negotiations. The British Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, is also scheduled to meet her American counterpart Marco Rubio in Washington on the same day. The British Foreign Office announced that “the UK and US will reaffirm their commitment to reaching a peace deal in Ukraine.”

Despite diplomatic efforts, the situation remains tense. Ukrainian officials reported that Russian forces continued their assaults, injuring at least nine individuals overnight from Sunday to Monday.

Zelensky characterized a recent call with US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner as “very substantive and constructive.” He stated on Telegram, “Ukraine is committed to continuing to work honestly with the American side to bring about real peace,” adding that the parties discussed “the next steps and the format of the talks with America.”

In contrast, Trump criticized Zelensky on Sunday, stating, “I have to say that I’m a little bit disappointed that President Zelensky hasn’t yet read the proposal, that was as of a few hours ago.” The US officials had engaged with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin the previous week, where Moscow rejected portions of the US proposal.

Ahead of the London discussions, Macron condemned what he described as Russia’s “escalatory path.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining pressure on Russia to encourage a peaceful resolution. “We will continue these efforts with the Americans to provide Ukraine with security guarantees, without which no robust and lasting peace will be possible,” Macron wrote on X.

Washington’s initial approach to resolving the nearly four-year conflict included a proposal for Ukraine to cede land that Russia has not successfully captured in exchange for security assurances. However, details regarding these security guarantees remain vague. The initial plan mentioned the potential deployment of jets to defend Kyiv, based in Poland.

Trump’s stance on Ukraine has fluctuated since his return to office in January. He initially expressed support for Putin while criticizing Zelensky for not adequately appreciating US backing. Recently, Trump has conveyed frustration over his unsuccessful attempts to persuade Putin to end the war, including a summit in Alaska, and has implemented sanctions on Russian oil companies.

As diplomatic efforts continue, the focus remains on achieving a sustainable peace agreement that addresses the needs and security concerns of Ukraine while navigating the complexities of international relations.
