U.K. Health Agency Detects New Strain of Mpox Virus in England

The U.K. Health Security Agency (UKHSA) announced on October 30, 2024, the identification of a new strain of the mpox virus in England. This discovery was made in a person who had recently traveled to Asia. According to Katy Sinka, a representative of the UKHSA, genomic testing has played a crucial role in detecting this strain, which exhibits characteristics of both major mpox subtypes.

The UKHSA stated it would continue to evaluate the implications of this new strain, which contains elements from clade 1, known for its severity, and clade 2. “Genomic sequencing showed that the mpox genome contained elements of clade Ib and IIb mpox,” the agency reported. Mpox, previously referred to as Monkeypox, is a viral disease related to smallpox. It can cause symptoms such as fever, body aches, and distinctive skin lesions and has the potential to be fatal.

Transmission occurs through infected animals as well as close physical contact between individuals. Sinka remarked, “It’s normal for viruses to evolve, and further analysis will help us understand more about how mpox is changing.” The emergence of this new strain raises alarms about the virus’s ongoing evolution and its implications for public health.

Trudie Lang, a researcher from the University of Oxford and director of the Global Health Network, emphasized the concern surrounding this case, stating, “It is of concern that there is an mpox case in the U.K., and of further concern that it is a new recombinant mpox virus.” She noted that the presence of mpox globally indicates an evolving virus, which is consistent with patterns observed in similar pathogens.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox a public health emergency in August 2024, following a significant outbreak primarily in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The status was lifted in September 2024 after a sustained decline in reported cases and fatalities. Lang explained that the virus’s evolution has shifted transmission patterns; earlier strains were predominantly transmitted from animals to humans, while recent outbreaks have shown increased human-to-human transmission, particularly within specific populations.

In 2022, an outbreak in Europe was characterized largely by sexual transmission, primarily affecting gay and bisexual men. The latest outbreak of clade 1b in 2024 has been linked to both close contact and sexual relations. Boghuma Titanji, an assistant professor of medicine at Emory University, commented on the implications of this new strain: “The identification of a recombinant mpox strain containing elements of both clade I and clade II is precisely what experts in the field feared would happen.”

As of late October 2024, nearly 48,000 confirmed mpox cases have been reported globally, resulting in 201 deaths across 94 countries. In the U.K., there has been a vaccination program targeting eligible groups, including individuals with multiple sexual partners and those engaged in group sexual activities. Since 2022, a “low level” of mpox cases has been identified in the U.K., particularly following the international spread of clade 2.
