Police in South Africa have arrested 11 individuals in connection with a mass shooting at a pub in Bekkersdal, which resulted in the deaths of ten people on October 1, 2023. The arrests occurred as authorities sought to investigate potential links between the suspects, many of whom are believed to be illegal miners, and the tragic incident.

In a coordinated operation, police and security personnel from Sibanye-Stillwater raided two residential properties in Westonaria, approximately 46 kilometers (39 miles) from Johannesburg. Among those detained were nine citizens of Lesotho and one individual from Mozambique, all suspected of residing in South Africa without legal authorization.

During these operations, law enforcement officials recovered unlicensed firearms, which included four handguns and an AK-47 rifle. Major General Fred Kekana, the acting provincial commissioner of Gauteng, reported that the cartridges and live ammunition found at the scene of the shooting matched the firearms seized during the arrests. These items have been sent for forensic testing to confirm their involvement in the tragic event.

In addition to the arrests, authorities charged a South African mine employee with offenses related to harboring illegal tenants and potentially obstructing justice. The owner of the pub was also charged with fraud and running an illegal liquor outlet, further complicating the case.

Context of Violence in Bekkersdal

Bekkersdal, a township surrounded by abandoned mine shafts, is notorious for illegal mining activities. The presence of illicit miners, often referred to as “zama-zamas,” has been linked to significant issues, including gang violence and the rise of illegal firearms in the region. The area, once thriving due to its mining industry, now faces persistent challenges from these illegal operations, predominantly controlled by migrants entering from Lesotho, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique.

Sibanye-Stillwater, which operates several mining projects in the vicinity, has been actively involved in addressing the complications arising from illegal mining. The company is working alongside law enforcement to combat the increasing violence and criminal activities associated with these illicit operations.

As investigations continue, the South African police aim to uncover the full extent of the connections between the arrested individuals and the shooting. The community remains shaken by the violence, highlighting the urgent need for effective measures to address crime and illegal activities in the region.
