Es Devlin’s Library of Us Revolutionizes Reading at Miami Beach

On the shores of Miami Beach, a remarkable installation called the Library of Us is redefining the experience of reading. Created by acclaimed designer Es Devlin, this kinetic library was unveiled as a centerpiece of the Faena Art Miami Art Week 2025. The installation invites visitors to pause, read, and engage in a shared ritual, transforming a typical beach setting into a vibrant space for community connection.

The Library of Us features a striking, triangular bookshelf that stands 6 meters tall and extends 15 meters in length. Housing 2,500 books, this dynamic structure rotates slowly on its axis every ten minutes, creating an almost imperceptible movement that encourages contemplation. The design integrates seamlessly with its surroundings, encircled by a shallow mirrored pool that reflects the bookshelf, enhancing the visual experience and blurring the lines between architecture and nature.

Interactive Experience and Community Engagement

At the core of this installation is a monumental circular reading table, capable of seating hundreds. This table consists of two concentric rings: while the outer circle remains still, the inner circle rotates in tandem with the bookshelf. This thoughtful architectural choice reshapes the act of reading into a collective experience, allowing participants to continuously face new passages and each other, fostering connections without the need for explicit direction.

In addition to the visual and spatial elements, sound plays a crucial role in the atmosphere of the Library of Us. A 250-excerpt audio score, narrated by Devlin herself and accompanied by music, fills the space with a rich tapestry of voices and literary fragments. This unique sonic environment transforms reading from a solitary act into a public ritual, enhancing the communal experience of literature.

Open until December 7, 2025, the Library of Us serves multiple purposes: it functions as a public library, a stunning visual sculpture, and a venue for collective reading. This project builds on Devlin’s previous work, including the Library of Light, which attracted nearly 200,000 visitors in Milan earlier this year. In Miami, Devlin’s vision expands to embrace the vastness of the beach and the collaborative spirit of Faena Art Week.

Lasting Impact and Additional Installations

The project’s legacy extends beyond its time on the beach. All 2,500 books, provided in partnership with Penguin Random House, will be donated to public libraries, schools, and community organizations across Miami following the event. This initiative ensures that the impact of the Library of Us resonates within the community long after the installation concludes.

Complementing this experience, two additional commissions are featured within the Faena Cathedral. The Reading Room consists of a 14-meter bench integrated with a bookshelf and LED screen, showcasing phrases contributed by the hotel’s diverse staff. Nearby, Tracing Time presents a collection of drawings and paintings that unveil Devlin’s artistic process through layers and repetition.

Together, these works provide a unique insight into Es Devlin’s multidisciplinary practice. The Library of Us stands not merely as an installation to be viewed but as an architectural entity that speaks to the power of shared language and collective reading experiences. It serves as a reminder that literature thrives when it is engaged with, slowed down, and held in common.
