Oregon Leads U.S. in Cybercrime Losses, New Study Reveals

New research indicates that residents of Oregon suffer the highest average financial losses from cybercrime in the United States, with victims losing an average of $65,045 each. This figure is more than double that of any other state, highlighting a significant regional disparity in the impact of cybercrime. The study, conducted by the firm SSL Dragon, examined data from the Internet Crime Complaint Center and the U.S. Census Bureau, revealing the stark differences in both the frequency and financial ramifications of cyberattacks across the country.

Oregon’s staggering total loss reached over $586 million across 9,013 victims in the last year, translating to an average loss per 100,000 residents of approximately $13.7 million. Following Oregon, Wyoming reported the second-highest average losses, with victims losing an average of $31,592 each, amounting to a total loss of $43.5 million from 1,377 victims.

High-Risk States and Victim Patterns

The findings further show that New Jersey and California rank third and fourth, respectively, in average losses per victim. New Jersey victims lost an average of $27,710, contributing to a total loss of $435 million from 15,702 incidents. California, while having the most substantial overall financial loss at over $2.5 billion, ranked fourth at an average loss of $26,389 per victim, affecting 96,351 residents.

Connecticut rounded out the top five states, with victims losing an average of $25,262, resulting in total losses of nearly $143.9 million. Nevada, New York, North Dakota, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire also featured prominently in the rankings for average losses per victim, showcasing a mix of both high financial loss and varying victim counts.

Interestingly, Alaska recorded the highest rate of cybercrime victims in the country, with 915 victims per 100,000 residents, although the average loss per victim in the state was comparatively low at $3,884. This suggests that while the volume of incidents is high, the monetary impact may be less severe than in states like Oregon, where criminals appear to target individuals with higher-value schemes.
