Two promising athletes from the Williams Lake Cross Country Ski Club, Anika Wallin and Nadia Wallin, recently showcased their skills at the Nordiq Canada 2026 Olympic Winter Games Trials. The event, which took place from December 13-16, 2023, at the Sovereign Lake Nordic Club in Vernon, British Columbia, attracted competitors from across the nation vying for a place on Team Canada for the upcoming Milan 2026 Winter Olympics.

Originally scheduled to be hosted in Prince George, the trials were relocated due to insufficient snow conditions at the Caledonia Nordic Club. Vernon’s high elevation and reliable snowfall provided the necessary environment for these critical qualification events.

In the 10 km Classic race, Anika finished in 19th place, while Nadia achieved a commendable 29th place among Canada’s elite female skiers. Nadia, the younger of the two, excelled in the 10 km Free event, securing 10th position, with Anika closely behind in 16th place. Their performance was particularly notable given that they were competing against seasoned athletes, many of whom are significantly older, including one who is still in high school.

On the final day of sprint racing, Anika placed 10th, and Nadia came in at 22nd. The Wallin sisters’ participation at the trials highlights their dedication and skill in a sport that demands rigorous training and perseverance.

Nadia, who is currently in her final year at Lake City Secondary School, continues to train locally with the Williams Lake Cross Country Ski Club. Anika, now attending the University of Calgary, trains with the Alberta World Cup Academy and practices in Calgary and Canmore. During the holiday season, she maintained her training regimen at Bull Mountain, as well as in Fort St. James and Vanderhoof while visiting family.

The Wallin sisters’ achievements at the Olympic trials reflect not only their personal dedication but also the growing talent emerging from smaller communities in Canada. As they continue their journey toward potential Olympic participation, their story serves as an inspiration for young athletes across the nation.
