Langley’s SkyTrain Construction Accelerates Ahead of Schedule
In 2025, the construction of Langley’s SkyTrain line transitioned from concept to a visible and extensive project. Initial work commenced in late 2024 at the future site of the final station located at the intersection of 203 Street and Industrial Avenue. By the end of 2025, significant construction activities were evident, with progress made on both stations in Langley City and Langley Township, particularly near the Willowbrook Shopping Centre.
The construction process involved piling operations that concluded earlier this year, followed by the erection of columns designed to support the station platforms. Work expanded along the full length of the proposed line, primarily along Fraser Highway. Notably, the new SkyTrain line will deviate in Langley, prompting construction along Fraser Highway and down an adjacent alley that runs parallel to the highway to the east of the Langley Bypass.
A significant portion of the 2025 construction focused on digging into roadways rather than erecting pillars. This approach was necessary to install duct banks that will carry electrical power lines essential for the SkyTrain’s operation. Additionally, a propulsion power substation will be established at 201A Street. Progress is already visible, with the first pillars taking shape along Industrial Avenue, where the roadway has been converted into a one-way zone to facilitate construction.
Local businesses, such as Windsor Plywood, situated next to the 203 Street station, are making plans to adapt to the changes. Responses to the project vary among residents and community leaders. Nathan Pachal, the Mayor of Langley City, expressed strong enthusiasm about the SkyTrain, highlighting years of planning that have led to this moment. In contrast, Eric Woodward, the Mayor of Langley Township, conveyed a more cautious optimism, urging attention to potential challenges.
The SkyTrain line, spanning approximately 16 kilometres, is scheduled to open in late 2029. Over the next two years, significant construction impacts are anticipated along the route. Once the distinctive “tulip pylons”—which widen at the top—are erected, the guideway segments will be set in place. The Langley Launcher, a large gantry system, has already begun its journey eastward from 184 Street in Surrey and will continue until it reaches the 203 Street station site.
The final pre-cast segments of the guideway are expected to be completed by mid-2027. Following the installation of the concrete guideway, subsequent work will focus on developing the electronic systems, laying tracks, and completing the stations and surrounding areas. As construction progresses, the community remains engaged, with residents eagerly anticipating the benefits that the new SkyTrain line will bring to Langley.
