Airdrie families, students, and community members gathered at the Airdrie Public Library on January 10, 2024, for an Education Town Hall aimed at addressing pressing issues within local classrooms. Organized by parent Michael Radziwon, the event, titled “For the Love of Education,” focused on advocacy, collaboration, and clarity to support well-funded public schools in the city.

Radziwon emphasized the importance of the event by stating, “It’s about who matters, who gets support, and who has to make do. We are getting tired of having to make do.” He noted that Airdrie’s growth has not been matched by adequate educational resources, particularly in light of overcrowded classrooms. The Town Hall served as a platform for educators and students to voice their concerns and discuss potential solutions for the future.

Insights from Educators and Students

Approximately 100 attendees filled the theatre room inside the Inspire building, where a panel of speakers addressed various challenges in the education system. Jeremy Klug, a trustee for Ward 3 on the Rocky View School Board, shared alarming statistics regarding Airdrie’s student population, which currently stands at 16,479. He highlighted that while several new school projects are underway, many existing schools remain at maximum capacity, relying heavily on modular classrooms to accommodate students.

Klug pointed out that funding per student in the 2022-2023 school year was $13,499, a significant decrease of 17.5 percent compared to previous years. This reduction has caused Alberta to drop from the fifth highest in the nation for education spending to the lowest.

Former teacher Daniel Nelles addressed the serious issues of overcrowding, rising incidents of violence in classrooms, and teacher burnout. He criticized the current curriculum, stating that many elements have not been updated since the 1980s. “Many teachers work 80 hours a week, which is simply unsustainable,” he remarked, sharing insights from his own experiences in the classroom.

Airdrie student Nuri Lee also shared her perspective, discussing the challenges of large class sizes. She cited her physics class, which began the semester with 36 students, making it difficult for individual students to receive adequate support from the teacher.

Political Perspectives and Community Engagement

The Town Hall was not without its political dimensions. Angela Pitt, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), declined to attend, stating in an email that the event was an “activist event” that would not provide a neutral platform for her participation. In contrast, fellow speaker Peter Guthrie championed the importance of education, asserting that it should never be treated merely as a budget item or a political issue. “Albertans want competence and professionalism,” he declared, representing his Progressive Conservative Party.

The event concluded with a question-and-answer session, allowing attendees to engage directly with the panelists. This interactive component underscored the community’s commitment to addressing educational challenges and exemplified a collective desire for a more robust and well-supported educational system.

As discussions continue regarding the future of education in Airdrie, the Town Hall has sparked significant dialogue about the necessary steps to ensure that all students receive the quality education they deserve.
