NASA Prepares for Historic Artemis II Moon Mission Launch

NASA is set to make significant strides in space exploration as the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, carrying the Orion spacecraft, prepares for its rollout from the Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The rocket will embark on a slow journey to its launch pad on Saturday, February 3, 2024, marking a crucial step towards the agency’s Artemis II mission, which aims to send four astronauts on a lunar flyby.

The SLS rocket, coupled with its mobile launch platform, will leave the assembly building around 07:00 EST (11:00 UTC). The journey will take approximately eight to ten hours as the 11 million-pound vehicle travels four miles to Launch Complex 39B. This rollout signifies the first crewed mission to the Moon’s vicinity since the last Apollo lunar landing in December 1972.

While Artemis II will not land on the lunar surface, it will send astronauts on a trajectory around the far side of the Moon. This journey will set a record for the distance humans have traveled from Earth, culminating in a high-speed reentry over the Pacific Ocean at approximately 25,000 mph (40,000 km/h). The crew includes NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen, who will become the fastest humans in history during this mission.

Historic Preparations Underway

The rollout of the Moon rocket is a noteworthy event for NASA. After exiting the Vehicle Assembly Building, the rocket will navigate eastward, making a left turn before ascending the ramp to Pad 39B, where it will overlook the Atlantic Ocean. “We will be at a cruising speed of under one mile per hour,” stated Charlie Blackwell-Thompson, NASA’s launch director for Artemis II. “It’ll be a little slower around the turns and up the hill.”

The crawler used to transport the SLS was originally built 60 years ago to carry NASA’s Saturn V rockets and has since been repurposed for the Artemis missions. John Honeycutt, chair of NASA’s Mission Management Team for Artemis II, expressed enthusiasm about the mission’s progress. “These are the kinds of days that we live for when you do the kind of work that we do,” Honeycutt remarked, emphasizing the significance of the moment.

The Artemis program, named after the twin sister of Apollo in Greek mythology, aims to establish a sustainable human presence on the Moon. Although the initiative was officially announced in 2019, its roots trace back to earlier programs, including the Orion project initiated in 2006. The program has evolved significantly, with tens of billions of dollars invested in developing the necessary technologies and systems.

Challenges Ahead for Artemis II

Despite the excitement surrounding the upcoming launch, significant challenges remain. NASA’s plans for a human-rated lunar lander and specialized spacesuits designed for lunar activities are still in development stages. Contracts have been established with companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin for the lunar lander, while Axiom Space is responsible for the astronaut suits.

A successful Artemis II mission is critical for validating the capabilities of the Orion spacecraft and the SLS rocket within the Artemis architecture. The SLS rocket, which costs over $2 billion per flight, is expected to be used for several more missions until commercial alternatives become available.

Geopolitical factors also play a role in the urgency surrounding the mission. With China aiming to land its astronauts on the Moon by 2030, U.S. officials are motivated to achieve a crew lunar landing to assert national prestige and access valuable lunar resources. Current discussions among lawmakers and NASA leadership emphasize the importance of meeting these objectives, particularly under the administration’s goal of achieving a human landing by January 20, 2029.

As preparations continue, the launch team will conduct final checkouts at the launch pad. A critical practice countdown, known as a Wet Dress Rehearsal (WDR), is scheduled for early February. During this rehearsal, the team will load the SLS rocket’s core and upper stages with super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. Lessons learned from the previous Artemis I mission will inform the procedures for Artemis II.

If all goes according to plan, NASA could potentially launch Artemis II as early as February 6, 2024. However, the schedule is tight, with limited launch opportunities available in February. Should the mission not launch by February 11, NASA would have to wait until March for a new series of launch windows.

Preparations coincide with ongoing training for the astronauts and flight controllers at Johnson Space Center in Houston. Honeycutt emphasized the importance of safety, stating, “As chair of the MMT, I’ve got one job, and it’s the safe return of Reid, Victor, Christina, and Jeremy. I consider that a duty and a trust, and it’s one I intend to see through.”
