Fire Displaces Residents at Chatham-Kent Social Housing Complex

A fire at a social housing complex in Chatham-Kent, Ontario, on March 14, 2024, has left residents of 16 units without homes. The incident occurred at 99 McNaughton Ave. W. and marks the second major fire at the location in less than a year. The previous blaze in August 2024 displaced more than 120 individuals.

According to municipal spokesperson Eric Labadie, Thursday’s fire was confined to a single unit. However, smoke prompted the evacuation of tenants from the entire second floor of D block. Some displaced residents have been accommodated in local hotels, while others have arranged their own temporary lodging.

“I’m hoping to have them back in by this weekend or early next week,” Labadie stated, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. The local community has rallied to support those affected, with Emmanuel Baptist Church opening its doors to provide shelter while fire crews managed the scene.

Housing Services staff have been actively assisting displaced individuals in finding temporary accommodations. The quick response from fire officials is credited with preventing a more serious outcome, according to Labadie.

In light of the recent fire, the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office is now investigating the cause of the blaze. Labadie noted that D block had previously sustained damage from the August 2024 fire, but most residents had since returned to their homes.
