New Mammography Unit Enhances Breast Cancer Screening in Sault Ste. Marie

Access to breast cancer screening has significantly improved in Sault Ste. Marie, with the introduction of a new mammography unit at the Group Health Centre. This advanced imaging technology is designed to facilitate earlier detection of breast cancer, potentially saving lives in the community and surrounding areas.

The new unit, equipped with tomosynthesis technology, utilizes low-dose X-rays to generate clearer and more detailed images. It is anticipated that the facility will serve over 6,000 patients annually. By enhancing local screening capabilities, the unit aims to provide more accurate assessments and enable timely treatment options, which are crucial in combating breast cancer effectively.

Community Support Fuels Investment

The establishment of this $300,000 mammography unit was made possible through community contributions, including a $150,000 matching donation from a collective of donors. Additional support came from members of the Algoma District Medical Group, Merrett’s GHC Pharmacies IDA, and various local businesses.

Official Resumption of Screening Services

The Ontario Breast Screening Program services at Group Health Centre officially resumed on January 21, 2026. Eligible individuals are encouraged to schedule a screening or consult their primary care providers regarding breast health screening options.

Kim Cadham, Manager of Diagnostic Imaging at the centre, highlighted the importance of the new technology. “This new mammography unit marks an important milestone in diagnostic imaging for our community,” Cadham commented. “It ensures patients can access high-quality breast screening with advanced technology that delivers accurate and timely results, close to home.”
