Etihad Airways has announced a significant expansion of its North American operations, introducing a new route from Abu Dhabi to Calgary, Canada, starting on November 9, 2026. This development marks a record-breaking achievement for the airline, as Calgary will be the first Canadian city to receive direct flights from Etihad, further solidifying the airline’s commitment to expanding its global network.

The new service to Calgary will also be the longest nonstop flight the city has ever experienced, covering approximately 6,243 nautical miles (11,562 kilometers) each way. This route will contribute to Etihad’s total of eight North American destinations, surpassing its previous record of seven. The airline has a long history in North America, having begun operations in 2005, with its inaugural route connecting Abu Dhabi to Toronto.

Flight Schedule and Aircraft Details

The new Calgary route will operate four times weekly using the Boeing 787-9. Given Calgary’s elevation of 3,606 feet (1,099 meters), there may be payload restrictions on flights returning to the Middle East. The exact configuration of the aircraft has yet to be confirmed, but it is anticipated that Etihad will utilize its most common layout for North American routes, which accommodates 303 seats, as this configuration is less premium and more suitable for connecting traffic.

Etihad’s departure from Abu Dhabi is scheduled for 8:45 AM, allowing for optimal connections to other flights, particularly to South Asia. The return flight to Abu Dhabi will depart Calgary at 6:05 PM, arriving the following day at 7:00 PM. This timing aligns with Etihad’s broader strategy to facilitate passenger movement between North America and high-demand markets in Asia.

Connecting Traffic Focus

Despite the introduction of this new route, the current demand for direct flights between Abu Dhabi and Calgary is relatively low. Booking data indicates that the existing market is nearly ten times smaller than the Dubai-Calgary segment. Therefore, Etihad will heavily rely on connecting passengers to bolster this route, particularly from key markets such as Delhi, Bangkok, and Mumbai. Each of these cities presents a substantial volume of potential travelers, with Delhi alone accounting for approximately 150,000 round-trip passengers annually.

The introduction of service to Calgary comes at a strategic time, as other carriers, including Qatar Airways, are also expected to expand their routes into Canada. As the aviation industry continues to rebound post-pandemic, airlines are keen to tap into new markets and enhance their global presence.

Record Expansion in North America

In addition to Calgary, Etihad Airways is set to launch routes to Charlotte and expand its services to other key cities including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago O’Hare, New York JFK, Toronto, and Washington Dulles by 2026. This expansion reflects the airline’s ambition to re-establish its position in North America, having added over 50 airports to its network in recent years.

Etihad’s renewed focus on North American routes comes after a period of significant contraction during the COVID-19 pandemic. The airline’s strategy now emphasizes rebuilding and expanding its international network, offering enhanced connectivity for travelers worldwide.

As Etihad Airways embarks on this ambitious expansion, many stakeholders will be watching closely to see how these new routes influence passenger travel patterns and contribute to the airline’s recovery and growth trajectory in a competitive global market.
