Port of Algoma Development Aligns with Federal Trade Goals
The proposed development of the Port of Algoma aligns closely with the Canadian federal government’s objectives to enhance trade and economic growth. Mayor Matthew Shoemaker expressed optimism following reports that the Port of St. John in New Brunswick achieved a remarkable 153 percent increase in goods moved internationally from Ontario during the 2024-25 period. This significant growth underscores the potential benefits of establishing the Port of Algoma, which aims to connect Northern Ontario and western Canada to key markets.
During a recent meeting of First Ministers, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, discussions focused on expanding and diversifying Canada’s trade initiatives. The mayor highlighted that the success of the Port of St. John exemplifies what could be achieved with the development of the Port of Algoma. “What we’re trying to achieve with our port… it’s already happening, but could be enhanced even further with the development of that port,” Shoemaker stated.
The data supporting the economic potential of the Port of Algoma is compelling. A recently completed business case study suggests that the port could potentially triple or quadruple the output currently shipped from Sault Ste. Marie by vessels. The mayor emphasized that this could lead to substantial cost savings for businesses operating in the region, further cementing Sault Ste. Marie’s role in Canada’s trade landscape.
Shoemaker believes that aligning local priorities with federal objectives is crucial for advancing the Port of Algoma project. He noted that the federal government has signed 12 trade and security agreements across multiple continents in the past six months. These agreements are expected to create significant investments in domestic industries, unlock new markets, and stimulate job growth within Canada.
According to estimates, removing internal trade barriers could lead to a $210 billion increase in GDP over time. This aligns with the federal government’s commitment to enhancing Canada’s economic potential through nation-building projects. The foundational investment required for the Port of Algoma, estimated at $200 million for infrastructure and rail upgrades, represents a small fraction of the costs associated with other major projects already announced.
“If the federal government is looking for a project that can achieve their nation-building objective… the Sault project fits squarely in line with what they are seeking,” Shoemaker remarked. He is scheduled to meet with MP Terry Sheehan to discuss the Port of Algoma business case and advocate for a meeting with the Minister of Transport to present the project’s full potential.
In addition to the port’s development, Shoemaker mentioned the importance of enhancing security measures within the region. Discussions have included the potential establishment of a Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) terminal at the airport or along the waterfront. While the priority remains on constructing the domestic port, the existing CBSA presence would facilitate a smoother transition to international port operations.
The progress of the Port of Algoma development reflects a broader commitment to economic revitalization in Sault Ste. Marie and positions the city as a key player in Canada’s ongoing trade evolution. With continued advocacy from local leaders and alignment with federal goals, the vision for a thriving port remains within reach.
