NASA Delays Artemis II Launch to March After Hydrogen Leak Issues
NASA has postponed the launch of its Artemis II mission, which aims to send astronauts to the Moon for the first time in over 53 years, until March 2024. The decision comes after a fueling test conducted on February 5 revealed persistent hydrogen leaks in the connection between the rocket and its launch platform at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Engineers encountered several challenges during the two-day Wet Dress Rehearsal (WDR), a critical practice countdown designed to identify issues ahead of the actual launch. According to NASA, while many objectives were met, the test highlighted unresolved hydrogen leak problems that had previously delayed the uncrewed Artemis I mission in 2022. The agency stated, “To allow teams to review data and conduct a second Wet Dress Rehearsal, NASA now will target March as the earliest possible launch opportunity for the flight test.”
The Artemis II mission will carry four astronauts aboard NASA’s Orion spacecraft on a journey around the far side of the Moon, marking the first crewed lunar flight since 1972. This mission is a crucial step towards future expeditions aimed at landing humans on the Moon’s south pole.
Prior to the countdown rehearsal, NASA officials had hoped for a successful test that would enable a launch as early as February 8. However, the window for launching Artemis II is limited, with only a few opportunities each month when the Moon’s position allows for a safe trajectory to return to Earth.
The first launch opportunity for Artemis II is now scheduled for March 6, 2024, with a two-hour window opening at 20:29 EST (01:26 UTC on March 7). The crew, which includes commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, mission specialist Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen, has been in medical quarantine since January 21, a standard procedure for astronauts before a flight. They will be released from quarantine to resume training as they await the new launch date.
During the fueling operations, which began later than planned due to cold temperatures, the launch team detected hydrogen leaks shortly after loading the liquid fuel into the Space Launch System (SLS) core stage. These leaks occurred in the same area as previous issues experienced during the Artemis I campaign, raising concerns about the reliability of the systems in place.
Liquid hydrogen and oxygen are transported from ground storage tanks to the SLS core stage through Tail Service Mast Umbilicals (TSMUs), structures that connect the rocket to the launch platform. Hydrogen, while an efficient rocket fuel, is notoriously difficult to manage due to its extremely low temperatures and the propensity for leaks.
NASA has established a safety limit of 4 percent concentration of hydrogen gas in the fuel housing. During this rehearsal, hydrogen levels exceeded that limit multiple times. To address the leaks, engineers attempted to warm up the interface to reseat the seals and adjust the propellant flow.
Despite these efforts, the countdown was halted at T-minus 5 minutes and 15 seconds due to a spike in the hydrogen leak. This termination occurred before the rocket activated its auxiliary power units and completed other crucial preflight checks.
After the countdown was called off, NASA managers decided to delay the Artemis II mission to allow engineers to thoroughly analyze the test data, mitigate the issues identified, and prepare for a second Wet Dress Rehearsal. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman emphasized the agency’s commitment to safety, stating, “We will only launch when we believe we are as ready to undertake this historic mission.”
The agency plans to hold a press briefing to provide further insights into the test results and discuss next steps. As of now, it remains unclear whether the rocket will be returned to its assembly building for repairs or if it will stay at the launch pad for further testing.
