Early Census Data Collection Begins in Northern NWT Communities

Statistics Canada has commenced its census data collection efforts in select Northern communities of the Northwest Territories (NWT) earlier than the scheduled date. This initiative aims to address concerns regarding potential under-counting in these hard-to-reach areas, as highlighted by census program expert Patrice Mathieu. The early campaign focuses on areas where access is limited and seasonal migration patterns pose challenges for accurate enumeration.

Mathieu explained that winter conditions often provide the most reliable access to remote communities. “Winter roads, frozen lakes, and snowmobile routes are crucial for reaching many Northern locations,” he noted. The official emphasized that delaying enumeration until spring increases the risk of under-counting due to factors such as hunting and fishing-related travel among residents.

The census campaign is currently underway in the north-west regions of the NWT, with Sachs Harbour and Aklavik cited as examples. For other areas of the territory, data collection is slated to begin in May 2026. The necessity of hiring local census enumerators presents another challenge. Mathieu revealed that despite launching a recruitment campaign in November, the census team often needs to send individuals from outside the regions to conduct the enumeration due to difficulties in hiring locally.

The census serves as a vital planning tool for governments and organizations, influencing the development of healthcare services, employment programs, emergency services, educational facilities, childcare options, public transport, and housing. “It’s our nation’s family portrait that we take every five years, so it’s time to renew our family portrait,” Mathieu stated. He emphasized that while elections determine representation, the census plays a crucial role in defining community identity.

Residents can participate in the census by completing the questionnaire online or by waiting for a census enumerator to visit their homes. For additional information regarding the 2026 census, individuals can visit the official Statistics Canada website at www.statcan.gc.ca/en/census.
