GO Transit service continues to face disruptions as signal repairs near Union Station are still underway following a recent train derailment. While crews from Metrolinx have largely completed necessary track repairs, ongoing work on the signal system will result in reduced train service on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

According to a statement issued by Metrolinx on Wednesday morning, train personnel are actively working on repairs just west of Union Station. “The majority of the necessary track repairs are completed, with the remaining work related to the signal system, which sustained significant damage,” the statement noted. It further indicated that these repairs would take longer to complete, extending the impact into the following day.

Delays were reported during the Wednesday morning commute, attributed to high passenger volumes and reduced schedules. Despite this, Metrolinx stated that “service has been steady,” with additional trips added on the Lakeshore East, Lakeshore West, and Milton GO Transit train lines to accommodate commuters.

The situation arose after a rear passenger car of a Kitchener-bound GO Transit train derailed at approximately 08:15 on Monday, March 11, 2024. Metrolinx confirmed that the train was traveling at low speed when it experienced an issue causing the rear car to leave the tracks and make contact with a track switch. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries during the incident, and the train was removed from the tracks on Tuesday.

Current Train Service Status

As of Wednesday morning, the following service intervals are in place for GO Transit and UP Express trains:

Barrie line: 30-minute service during morning and afternoon peak hours
Kitchener line: 30-minute service during peak hours and 60-minute service during off-peak hours
Lakeshore East line: 15 to 30-minute service during peak hours, 60-minute service during off-peak hours
Lakeshore West line: 15 to 30-minute service during peak hours, 60-minute service during off-peak hours
Milton line: 30-minute service during peak hours
Richmond Hill line: 60-minute service during peak hours
Stouffville line: 30-minute service during peak hours
UP Express: Normal 15-minute service

As the situation develops, Metrolinx continues to monitor train operations closely and is working to restore full service as soon as possible. Commuters are advised to stay updated on service changes and delays through official channels.

For those affected by the earlier derailment, information regarding potential refunds has been made available by GO Transit. Individuals seeking reimbursement are encouraged to follow the established process outlined by the agency.

Metrolinx has not yet responded to requests for an on-camera interview regarding the ongoing repairs and service disruptions, leaving commuters seeking clarity on the situation. The investigation into the cause of the derailment is ongoing, and further details are expected as officials continue to assess the incident.
