UK Police Investigate Epstein Files Amid Allegations of Wrongdoing

British police forces are collaborating to assess potential crimes detailed in documents from the U.S. Justice Department’s investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. This includes serious allegations involving Prince Andrew, a member of the British royal family. The National Police Chiefs’ Council announced on October 11, 2023, that a national coordination group has been established to support police forces examining issues stemming from over 3 million pages of released documents.

The council emphasized that the investigation may take considerable time due to the extensive volume of material and the complexities of international law. In a statement, they noted, “Policing and its law enforcement partners are taking this matter extremely seriously, and will assess all information thoroughly.” While specific police forces engaged in this effort were not named, at least eight have confirmed they are reviewing information contained within the files.

Among the areas of focus are concerns regarding Epstein’s private jet, which may have been implicated in sex trafficking activities. Additionally, the investigation includes allegations that Prince Andrew sent confidential reports to Epstein during his tenure as Britain’s international trade envoy.

In particular, police in Surrey, a county adjacent to southeast London, reported that the documents include allegations of sex trafficking occurring in the village of Virginia Water between 1994 and 1996. The Surrey Police have not revealed details about the alleged perpetrators or victims but urged anyone with information regarding these claims to come forward. “Where relevant, and via the national coordination group, we will engage with law enforcement agencies to obtain access to further information which may support our enquiries,” the force stated.

The Epstein scandal has significantly impacted the royal family and British politics, particularly due to Epstein’s associations with notable figures, including Prince Andrew and Peter Mandelson, the former U.K. ambassador to Washington. Following the ongoing revelations, King Charles III took decisive action in October 2023, stripping his brother of royal titles, including his designation as a prince, to shield the royal family from further scandal.

During this period, Prime Minister Keir Starmer faced criticism for perceived poor judgment after documents indicated that Mandelson maintained a closer relationship with Epstein than previously acknowledged when Starmer appointed him to Washington.
