Fourth Complainant Testifies in Frank Stronach’s Sexual Assault Trial

The sexual assault trial of Canadian businessman Frank Stronach continues in a Toronto courtroom, with the fourth of seven female complainants taking the stand. Stronach, aged 93, faces a total of 12 charges, including sexual assault and forcible confinement. Among these charges are two historical counts of rape and attempted rape, which were abolished in 1983 under amendments to the Criminal Code.

The allegations span a significant period, ranging from 1977 to 1990, with one incident specifically reported to have occurred in suburban Scarborough. The trial is overseen by Superior Court Justice Anne Molloy, and all seven complainants are expected to testify.

On Wednesday, the court heard from a woman in her 70s who described an alleged assault by Stronach in a midtown Toronto apartment in 1977. She recounted that after dining with Stronach at his restaurant, she accepted his invitation to visit his apartment. Once there, she claimed Stronach left the room briefly. Upon his return, she stated he pushed her over the arm of a chair in an attempt to rape her.

The woman testified that while there was no penetration, she managed to stand up, grab her belongings, and leave the apartment. During cross-examination, Stronach’s lawyer, Leora Shemesh, challenged the woman’s account, referring to her previous statements made during a police interview in 2024.

In that interview, she had indicated she did not view herself as a victim of the alleged assault. Responding to this, she firmly stated, “I’m a survivor.” Shemesh further suggested that the woman may have been mistaken about the location of the alleged attack, asserting that Stronach was “associated with” a downtown unit at Harbourfront during that time. The complainant maintained her recollection of the midtown location was accurate.

The courtroom atmosphere has been described as tense, with frequent combative exchanges between the defense and the complainants as the trial progresses. The outcome of this case will be closely monitored, given Stronach’s prominence as the founder of Magna International, a major player in the auto-parts industry.

As the trial unfolds, it highlights the complex issues surrounding historical sexual assault allegations and the challenges faced by survivors in seeking justice. The proceedings are expected to continue, with more testimonies from the remaining complainants anticipated in the coming days.
