Beloved Family Man John Brown Passes Away at 83

John Brown, aged 83, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2026, surrounded by his family at the North Bay Regional Health Centre. His death followed a brief illness, marking the end of a life characterized by love, adventure, and a deep appreciation for nature.

John was predeceased by his cherished wife, Ethel Amell, who passed away in 2023. Together, they formed a unique partnership, with John often described as the “wild card” balancing Ethel’s structured approach to life. Their enduring relationship exemplified the idea that opposites attract.

A Life Dedicated to Family and Nature

John’s family includes his step-son, Darwin Dunn (Tammy-Lynn) of South River, and his grandchildren, Riley (Megan Lott) and Erika Dunn. He was also a father figure to his daughter, Karen Tennant (Dale Rochon), and a loving grandfather to her children, Matthew and Tyler Jolliffe of St. Catharines.

Having served as a 2nd Class Engineer in the Canadian Armed Forces (Navy), John led a disciplined life shaped by his military experiences. Yet, those closest to him recognized a free spirit beneath his tough exterior. He found joy in the outdoors, often indulging in activities such as trout fishing in Algonquin Park, exploring local wildlife, or taking long drives to appreciate nature’s beauty.

John’s kindness and storytelling ability made family gatherings memorable. He was a devoted dog owner and loved sharing tales that brought laughter and connection, cementing his role as a beloved family member.

Legacy and Memorial

John is survived by his brothers, Terry Brown (Edith) of Port Colborne, Dave Brown (Marg) of St. Catharines, Paul Brown (Cathy) of Havelock, and Brian Brown of Milton. He was predeceased by his parents, Agnes (Dwyer) and John Brown, both from St. Catharines.
