Community Remembers Alma Atherton, 82, After Courageous Battle
Alma Atherton, aged 82, has passed away following a prolonged battle with cancer, as confirmed by her family. She died peacefully on February 21, 2026, at the Elk Valley Hospital, surrounded by the love and support of her family and caregivers.
Born on November 4, 1943, Alma was a cherished member of her family and community. She was preceded in death by her mother, Phylis Atherton; father, Bert Atherton; sister, Doreen Lozza; and nephew, Jimmy Lozza. She is survived by her brothers, Bill and Tim Atherton, as well as her nephew, Tom Lozza, and niece, Linda Pryhitko. Alma had resided at Trinity Lodge for several years, where she formed lasting friendships that enriched her life.
Alma was known for her private nature and her aversion to fuss, yet she had a remarkable ability to care for others. Her neighbors, Alice Heaton, Terri Filek, and Sharon Gleason, provided unwavering support during her illness, embodying the spirit of community that Alma valued deeply. The family extends their gratitude to Dr. Paul Michal and his medical team for their compassionate care, allowing Alma to remain at home until the end of her journey.
The Elk Valley Support Team played a vital role in Alma’s final months, consistently returning to provide care and companionship. Their dedication brought joy to her days, and she often kept them on their toes with her spirited personality.
In accordance with Alma’s wishes, there will be no public service held. A private interment will take place, allowing her family to honor her memory in a more personal setting. Alma’s life was marked by her love for others, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
In a message from her family, they expressed, “We love you, Alma,” reflecting the warmth and affection she inspired in those around her.
