Alberta’s 2026 Budget Boosts Infrastructure, Education, and Healthcare
The Alberta government has unveiled its 2026 budget, which allocates significant funding to health care, infrastructure, and education in southern Alberta. This budget, announced on Thursday, prioritizes projects that aim to enhance safety, commerce, and community services across the region.
A standout feature of the budget is the allocation of $152 million over three years for the twinning of Highway 3, a critical route stretching from east of Bow Island to Medicine Hat. Bill Chapman, vice-president of the Highway 3 Twinning Development Association, expressed gratitude for this investment, emphasizing its importance to the economic viability of southern Alberta and the agri-food corridor. The twinning project is part of a larger initiative to improve the highway over a total of seven phases.
This infrastructure investment is seen as vital for enhancing safety and facilitating trade. Gordon Reynolds, Mayor of Bow Island, stated, “This investment recognizes the essential role Highway 3 plays in safety, commerce, and connection throughout southern Alberta.”
In addition to highway improvements, the provincial government has allocated $443 million for small and mid-sized municipalities to enhance water and wastewater infrastructure. This funding is particularly important for cities like Lethbridge. Mayor Blaine Hyggen noted that he looks forward to collaborating with the provincial government to better understand how these budget proposals will directly impact Lethbridge.
Education and Healthcare Investments
The budget also includes substantial support for education, with $3.3 billion designated for 161 new and ongoing school projects. Kyle Beauchamp, associate superintendent of business affairs at the Lethbridge School Division, highlighted the need for increased support in classrooms. He stated, “We want to get more supports in classrooms… to help maintain the inflationary pressures we’re seeing on those services as well.”
Post-secondary institutions are set to benefit from increased funding aimed at expanding seats in high-demand programs, along with an increase in the Campus Alberta operating grant. Digvir Jayas, president and vice-chancellor of the University of Lethbridge, emphasized the importance of stable funding for maintaining program quality and supporting faculty. He mentioned that targeted funding for engineering, health care, and education would further strengthen the institution’s impact.
The budget reaffirms a previous commitment of $35 million over three years for the Southern Alberta Medical School (SAMP) at the University of Lethbridge. This funding will facilitate renovations of the community centre for well-being, transforming it into the new SAMP facility, which is expected to be operational by July 2027.
Healthcare infrastructure is also receiving attention. The oldest hospital in Alberta, the Cardston Health Centre, will undergo $74 million in upgrades and renovations. Additionally, the government has re-announced $59 million over the next three years to develop a catheterization laboratory at the Chinook Regional Hospital. Enhancements to the intensive care unit capacity at both the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital and Chinook Regional Hospital are also included in the budget.
Furthermore, Medicine Hat College is set to receive $2 million over three years to fund a community wellness project, aimed at creating modern and integrated learning spaces to better serve the community.
Overall, the 2026 budget demonstrates the Alberta government’s commitment to investing in vital infrastructure, healthcare, and education projects that will benefit southern Alberta residents for years to come.
