Kwantlen Polytechnic University Launches Lifelong Learning for 50+

A new cycle of educational opportunities commenced in February 2024 at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) with the launch of the latest session of TALK (Third Age Learning at Kwantlen). This initiative is designed for individuals aged 50 and older, providing a platform for continued learning and engagement within the community. The program has been active for nearly 25 years, with Jean Garnett, the current program chair, participating since 2003.

The offerings this year are diverse, ranging from courses on generative AI to discussions about the popular television drama “The Pitt.” Other topics include the psychology of climate change, the history of Ancient Rome, the legacy of Tommy Douglas, and the poetry of the First World War. This breadth of subjects reflects the program’s commitment to fostering intellectual curiosity among its participants.

Field Trips and Engaging Discussions

In addition to classroom learning, TALK organizes annual field trips to various local attractions. This year’s excursions will feature a guided forest walk in the traditional territory of the Sq’ewa:lxw First Nations People, alongside visits to the B.C. Legislature, the Derek Doubleday Arboretum, and the Museum of Surrey. These trips aim to deepen participants’ understanding of their environment and heritage.

Moreover, the program includes popular events such as the Philosopher’s Corner, where lively discussions on topical issues take place. Upcoming sessions will explore challenges facing Canada, the relationship with the United States, traditional versus alternative medicine, and the ethical considerations surrounding AI-generated music and artwork.

Highlighting Innovation in Food Production

One key event this spring is the Compelling Conversations session scheduled for March 11, 2024, at KPU’s Richmond campus. Lenore Newman, director of the Food and Agriculture Institute at the University of the Fraser Valley, will address the impact of technological advancements on the future of food production. This event is free, but prior registration is required.

The ability to offer free events stems from a generous endowment provided by a former member of TALK, ensuring that learning remains accessible. The majority of courses are supported by KPU, with many speakers being current or former professors at the university. This unique environment fosters a different type of engagement compared to traditional university settings, as participants attend purely out of curiosity and a desire to learn.

Garnett highlighted the program’s ability to maintain a revenue-neutral model, aided by a modest annual membership fee of $10, with individual courses priced between $15 and $20. “That’s why we say TALK is cheap,” she noted, emphasizing the program’s accessible approach to lifelong learning.

As the demand for lifelong learning continues to grow, initiatives like TALK play a crucial role in enriching the lives of older adults, demonstrating that education knows no age limits. This commitment to learning not only benefits the participants but also strengthens community ties and fosters a culture of knowledge sharing.
