New French-Language School Planned for Sussex, Prioritized by District
Plans for a new French-language school in Sussex are moving forward, as the **Francophone South School District** has identified it as a top priority. During a recent meeting with town officials, it was communicated that the school is part of a broader initiative to enhance educational opportunities for francophone students in the region.
The proposed school, along with another facility in the **St. George-St. Stephen** area, was established as a commitment following a lawsuit from the district’s education council. That lawsuit claimed the previous **Progressive Conservative government** violated the Charter rights of francophone students by failing to provide adequate educational facilities. As part of the settlement, **$150,000** has been allocated in the **2025-2026** budget to conduct a study aimed at identifying suitable locations for both schools.
At the **Sussex council** meeting on **February 17**, Chief Administrative Officer **Jason Thorne** reported on a video call with school district representatives. He confirmed that Sussex was selected as the location for one of the new schools, addressing the educational needs of approximately **165 potential students** identified as “French-language rights holders” in the area.
Details Still Limited, but Progress Expected
Despite the positive news, specific details regarding the school’s timeline remain sparse. Thorne highlighted that the project is currently ranked **fourth out of sixty** on the district’s priority list, according to a report from the town’s economic and long-range planning committee. The report also indicated that no construction is anticipated before **2030**.
The school district is set to present additional information to the Sussex council during the committee’s meeting in **April**. Thorne characterized the project as being in its “very early stages,” emphasizing the town’s supportive stance while noting that ultimate decisions rest with the school district.
Deputy Mayor **Tim Wilson**, who facilitated the meeting, expressed no objections to the establishment of a French-language school within Sussex’s boundaries. He underscored the importance of the initiative for the community.
Community Support and Future Engagement
**Geneviève Chiasson**, a spokesperson for the Francophone South School District, stated that discussions with municipal representatives from both Sussex and **St. Stephen** have taken place regarding the future construction of these schools. Chiasson noted that local officials recognize the potential benefits these projects could bring to community development and vitality.
Plans are in place for further engagement with municipalities and the community prior to the conclusion of the school year. Chiasson reiterated the district’s commitment to collaboration as they move forward with these essential educational projects.
Provincial spokesperson **Diana Chávez** acknowledged awareness of the discussions but deferred further comment to the town and the school district.
As developments unfold, the community remains hopeful for enhanced educational opportunities for francophone students in Sussex and surrounding areas.
