22 Wing Hosts Annual Mental Health Expo, Strengthening Community Bonds
The Fitness and Wellness Centre at 22 Wing North Bay buzzed with activity on March 6, 2024, as the base hosted its ninth annual Mental Health Expo. Over 400 military personnel and their families attended the event, which featured more than 60 booths from local organizations providing resources for mental health and wellness. The expo aimed to reduce stigma, educate participants, and serve as a comprehensive resource hub for families navigating the complexities of military life.
Lieutenant-Colonel JJ Verran, acting wing commander, addressed the challenges faced by military personnel and their families. “Working in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) can be difficult at times,” he stated. “Short notice deployments and extended training away from loved ones are common. Events like this help us recognize those challenges and build resilience among our personnel and their families.” Verran emphasized the importance of fostering connections between military members and the broader community, highlighting the initiative to be engaged and supportive community members.
The event featured discussions on a wide range of topics, from mental health services to the impact of technology and social media on daily life. Tessa Clermont, executive director of the North Bay Military Family Resource Centre, noted that the expo serves as a vital resource for families. “It can be challenging to navigate the military lifestyle, particularly due to relocations and transitions,” she explained during her panel discussion. “This expo provides a convenient way for families to find all available resources in one place.”
Clermont observed a significant shift in mental health awareness within the CAF over her 11 years in the role. “One of the biggest changes has been the CAF’s willingness to evolve and become more inclusive,” she remarked. She also highlighted unique offerings in North Bay, such as a family medical clinic on the base, while acknowledging ongoing challenges like childcare waitlists. “Eighty percent of families feel confident navigating the challenges of military life, which speaks to the strength of our community,” she added.
Capt. Mark Emmerson participated as a panelist, discussing the role of intentional technology and social media use in mental health. “It’s essential to ask yourself, ‘Am I intentionally using this system?’ If you find yourself engaging with technology passively, it may be time to reassess your usage,” he advised. Emmerson noted the significant progress made within the CAF regarding mental health, stating, “The fact that we’re hosting a mental health expo today demonstrates how seriously we take it.”
The expo not only provided valuable information but also facilitated conversations aimed at breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health issues. Emmerson highlighted that seeking help has become increasingly normalized in recent years. “If you have a broken leg, you go to the doctor. The same principle applies to mental health. It’s perfectly okay to seek help when needed,” he said.
The success of the mental health expo illustrates a growing commitment to supporting military families and fostering community ties. As the event concluded, attendees left equipped with knowledge and resources to help them navigate the unique challenges of military life. The ongoing dialogue around mental health and wellness continues to strengthen the bonds between 22 Wing and the North Bay community, ensuring that support systems remain accessible and effective.
