Investing in Youth: Mentorship as Key to Calgary’s Future
Ken Lima-Coelho, a member of the think tank focused on youth development, emphasizes the importance of mentorship for shaping the future of communities, particularly in rapidly growing cities like Calgary. As the leader of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary and Area, Lima-Coelho has witnessed firsthand the transformative power of mentoring relationships.
In his experience, asking individuals to reflect on their own mentors reveals a common thread: a person who provided support and guidance at a crucial moment. These mentors can be family members, teachers, or even neighbors, but their impact is profound. For many, mentorship has been a pivotal factor in their personal and professional growth.
Calgary is expanding, often celebrated for its new developments and increasing economic opportunities. Yet, this growth can also create challenges, especially for the city’s youth. Currently, over 180 young people are waiting to be matched with a volunteer mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters. Many of these individuals are experiencing what are known as “ACEs,” or adverse childhood experiences, which can include navigating new educational environments, dealing with economic instability, or combating feelings of isolation in an unfamiliar city.
The Importance of Relational Infrastructure
When discussing population growth, the conversation frequently centers on statistics and infrastructure. However, Lima-Coelho highlights an equally critical aspect: relational infrastructure. This term refers to the network of supportive adults, teachers, and mentors that young people rely on as they develop their identities and build their self-esteem.
In a city experiencing rapid growth, social networks can become strained. Families may move away, neighborhoods can change quickly, and schools become overcrowded. As parents manage multiple jobs, technology often replaces face-to-face connections. This environment can lead to feelings of disconnection among young people, which can hinder their development.
Research consistently demonstrates that mentorship can significantly alter life outcomes. A stable, supportive adult outside a young person’s family can enhance academic performance, improve mental health, and increase long-term employment prospects. Lima-Coelho argues that mentorship should not be considered an optional resource; it is essential for the future workforce and community leaders.
Call to Action for Calgary’s Residents
For Calgary to thrive, investments must extend beyond physical expansion to include the cultivation of strong community connections. Mentorship presents a valuable opportunity. By dedicating just a few hours each week, mentors can profoundly influence the trajectory of a young person’s life.
Lima-Coelho encourages Calgary’s residents to consider stepping into mentorship roles. If even a small percentage of the city’s newest residents were to engage in this capacity, the potential impact on the community could be significant. Investing in mentorship is not just about improving individual lives; it is about building a resilient, connected future for Calgary.
In conclusion, as Calgary continues to grow, the need for relational infrastructure becomes increasingly vital. By focusing on mentorship, the city can foster a supportive environment that nurtures its youth, ultimately shaping a brighter future for all.
