Sackville Library Seeks Expansion to Meet Growing Community Needs

The Sackville Public Library is facing significant space constraints and is actively exploring options for a new, larger facility to better serve its growing community. Board chair Merrill Fullerton emphasized that the current library, built in 1984, is inadequate, especially as the local population has expanded to 6,099 according to the 2021 census. The library’s usable space is a mere 2,600 square feet, far below the 8,200 square feet recommended by the provincial library service.

Fullerton stated that the primary floor of the library houses its entire collection, public computer workstations, and programming areas, while the basement, which is not accessible for all patrons, adds to the limitations. “We’re a fraction of where we should be,” he remarked, highlighting the urgent need for improvements. The provincial library service’s needs assessment, which remains a draft document, supports this call for expansion.

Library Board Advocates for Collaborative Facilities

During a recent presentation to the Tantramar council, Fullerton proposed that the library could become an anchor tenant in a new multipurpose municipal building. He expressed openness to various partnership opportunities, aiming to create a space that could accommodate not only the library’s needs but also those of other community services, such as the farmers’ market and performing arts. “I think there’s some real, interesting potential to see a multi-use facility emerge,” he said.

The conversation around a multipurpose building has been ongoing for decades in Sackville, according to Tantramar Councillor Michael Tower. He noted that the idea has been revisited multiple times but has struggled to gain traction due to financial concerns and site selection challenges. Recently, the Sackville Farmers’ Market has joined the discussion, advocating for a year-round location and proposing that the municipality form a committee to explore the project further.

Community Support and Future Plans

While the current library building has served its purpose, Fullerton indicated that the library needs to accommodate an additional 10,000 books and offer accessible program space. The board is prepared to engage in fundraising efforts once plans for the new facility take shape. “We really need to hear officially from the municipality on where they see this going and how that can tie into some other community needs,” he added.

The urgency for a new building is underscored by Sackville’s continued population growth. Tower noted that the forthcoming municipal elections on May 11, 2023, will make it challenging for the current council to initiate a major new project. However, he acknowledged that the library’s limitations are a pressing issue that the new council will have to address.

As the Sackville community continues to evolve, the call for a more accessible and spacious library echoes the need for a broader vision that encompasses the diverse needs of its residents.
