Brandon School Division Launches NorthStar Program for Students

Brandon School Division has introduced the NorthStar Program, an after-school tutoring and mentoring initiative aimed at supporting high school students. This program, which will start this year with a cohort of approximately 50 to 60 Grade 9 students, seeks to help them achieve both academic and personal success as they transition into high school.

Responding to Student Needs

The NorthStar Program is designed to tackle a recognized gap in student support during the critical transition into high school. According to Susan Gilleshammer, the assistant superintendent of student services, beginning the program in Grade 9 allows the division to connect with students early in their high school experience. This proactive approach aims to help students develop strong academic habits, confidence, and a sense of belonging, all of which are essential for long-term success.

Gilleshammer emphasized the importance of this initiative in an email, stating, “The NorthStar Program will provide after-school tutoring, mentorship, and additional supports to help students stay engaged with their learning and their school community.” The program is made possible through the Bright Futures expansion grant from the Manitoba Department of Education and Early Childhood Learning, which funds similar initiatives for high school students in Winnipeg.

Program Structure and Evaluation

Participants in the NorthStar Program will be selected in collaboration with teachers, student services staff, and families. This collaborative approach ensures that the program reaches those who stand to benefit the most. Gilleshammer noted that starting with a smaller cohort allows for a thoughtful launch, enabling the school division to learn from the initial group and make informed decisions about future expansion and integration into existing student support services.

Success metrics for the NorthStar Program will include both quantitative and qualitative benchmarks. These will encompass attendance rates, credit completion, academic achievement, graduation rates, and feedback from students and parents regarding confidence and engagement levels. Gilleshammer stated, “Together, these measures will help provide a comprehensive picture of how the program supports students academically while also strengthening their connection to school and their future pathways.”

If the NorthStar Program proves successful, there are plans to expand its model, allowing more students to benefit from this essential support. Gilleshammer highlighted the initiative’s broader purpose: “The NorthStar Program represents Brandon School Division’s commitment to supporting students not only academically, but also socially and personally, as they navigate the pivotal years of high school.”
