Costco Canada Issues Urgent Chocolate Recall and Refunds
Costco Canada has announced a recall of two chocolate products due to potential health risks linked to food contamination. On January 8, 2024, the retailer informed customers of the recall involving chocolates manufactured by the Nova Scotia-based company, Peace by Chocolate. The affected products are The Harmony Bar and the Classic Box of 15 assorted filled chocolates, which were available for purchase online between September 7 and December 3, 2023.
The recall was initiated following a voluntary decision by Peace by Chocolate after one of its ingredient suppliers, Tootsi Impex Inc., recalled a specific lot of pistachios due to possible Salmonella contamination. The contamination risk has raised serious health concerns, prompting Costco to advise its customers against consuming the affected items. Notably, no other products within the Peace by Chocolate range are impacted by this recall.
Health risks associated with Salmonella can be severe, even if contaminated food does not appear spoiled. Symptoms for healthy individuals may include fever, headache, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems, may face more severe complications, including bloodstream infections that require hospitalization.
As of now, Peace by Chocolate has reported that it has not received any illnesses linked to the recalled products. Customers seeking refunds can return either the affected items or the entire variety pack to any Costco warehouse. The company encourages individuals with questions to reach out via email at [email protected] or by calling 1 (855) 970-1414, ext. 0.
Background on Pistachio Contamination
This recall is part of a broader trend in Canada, where an increasing number of recalls have emerged related to pistachios and products containing them. Reports indicate that as of December 2025, pistachios sourced from Iran and items produced with these nuts have been recalled due to Salmonella contamination. This series of incidents has resulted in over 150 reported illnesses and at least 24 hospitalizations.
In light of these developments, consumers are urged to remain vigilant and stay informed about product recalls, ensuring their health and safety when purchasing food items. Costco’s swift action in addressing the recall aims to mitigate any potential risks and protect its customers.
