PowerBank Embraces Nova Scotia’s Solar Initiative as a Win-Win
A Toronto-based renewable energy company, PowerBank, has expressed strong support for Nova Scotia’s new initiative aimed at promoting community solar gardens. This program, launched in 2024, incentivizes the establishment of large solar fields, enabling local groups and organizations to generate clean electricity for consumers. PowerBank has already secured approval for one project and has proposed two additional projects under the Community Solar Program.
The initiative provides a unique opportunity for community groups to establish solar gardens, which consist of extensive arrays of solar panels. These gardens allow residents to subscribe to the clean electricity produced, leading to potential savings on their power bills. “We like this program because I think it’s a win-win for all the parties involved,” said Tracy Cheng, Chief Commercial Officer of PowerBank. She emphasized that these solar projects will not only help Nova Scotia achieve its goal of producing 80 percent of its electricity from renewable sources but will also contribute to reducing the financial burden on customers who subscribe.
Subscribers to these solar gardens can expect to save approximately two cents per kilowatt hour on their electricity bills, translating to savings of 10 to 15 percent on their overall costs. The energy produced by the solar gardens will be fed into the Nova Scotia Power grid, allowing customers to benefit from renewable energy without needing direct connections to the solar sources.
Community Impact and Future Projects
PowerBank plans to begin construction on a 4.8-megawatt solar project near Brooklyn, N.S., in the spring. This project is expected to supply electricity to up to 630 homes annually. Additionally, two smaller projects are proposed near Antigonish and Bridgetown, with the latter still awaiting final approvals. The company is currently seeking letters of support from municipal governments in the areas where these projects will be located.
Dustin Enslow, Deputy Warden for the Municipality of Annapolis County, remarked on the positive reception of the project during a presentation made by Cheng to the council in November. “When the opportunity arose through public consultation, we were very receptive to it,” Enslow stated. The project near Bridgetown is expected to power up to 250 homes in the vicinity.
The local government sees significant benefits from the initiative, aligning with the joint climate change action plans shared between Annapolis Royal and the Town of Middleton. Enslow highlighted the importance of local engagement, noting that PowerBank has committed to employing local contractors for the construction and maintenance of the solar gardens over the 25-year contract period.
Enhancing Energy Stability
In addition to promoting renewable energy and reducing costs, Enslow noted that the introduction of an additional energy source in the community would enhance overall stability for residents. “We have a very unique power grid here where we actually steal from neighbouring municipalities,” he explained. The municipality typically sources its power from Yarmouth, Bridgewater, and other areas of the Annapolis Valley, which often leads to power outages.
While the council’s support for PowerBank’s proposed projects remains conditional, there is a strong belief in the potential benefits they can bring. “This is just one way that our municipality can continue to thrive and move forward in a positive direction,” Enslow concluded, indicating optimism for the future of renewable energy in the region.
The Nova Scotia initiative exemplifies a growing trend towards sustainable energy solutions, highlighting the collaborative efforts between private companies and local governments to foster green technology and community engagement.
