Fredericton SciFest Offers Fun Learning Experience for Families
Families in New Brunswick are exploring the wonders of science this March Break at the annual SciFest, hosted by Science East. The four-day event, taking place at the Fredericton Trade and Convention Centre, features a variety of demonstrations, interactive exhibits, and hands-on activities designed for audiences of all ages.
During the first day of SciFest, attendees flocked to popular attractions, including a planetarium show presented in a portable dome and the engaging Van de Graaf generator. According to Jenn MacDonnell, executive director of Science East, the event aims to combine education with entertainment. “It’s meant for families to come explore our exhibits and activities while getting exposed to science, scientific thinking, and different specimens,” she stated.
The event serves a dual purpose: not only does it provide entertainment, but it also seeks to inspire young minds to consider careers in science. MacDonnell expressed her excitement at seeing attendees of all ages engage with the exhibits.
Young participants like Diego Tubb shared their enthusiasm about the experience. “I think it’s really interesting and I’m learning a lot of stuff,” he commented. Tubb sees this event as a perfect way to begin his school break. Similarly, Alexis Kritikos, who traveled from Sackville, expressed her delight, saying, “This is really fun; I’ve never been here before. If this is any indication, it’s going to be a really good trip.”
The timing of SciFest coincides with a school break, allowing children to continue their learning outside the classroom. MacDonnell emphasized that hosting the event in downtown Fredericton enhances accessibility, making it easier for families to participate. “We love having public events like this that welcome all kinds of people to experience Science East activities and exhibits,” she said.
SciFest runs daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, providing ample opportunity for families to learn together and enjoy the interactive displays. The event not only highlights the importance of science education but also fosters a sense of community among attendees.
As families continue to engage with the various activities, SciFest stands as a testament to the value of fun, educational experiences during the school holidays.
