Illinois Extension to Discuss Centennial Soil Archive at Granville
The Putnam County Public Library District will host a presentation by the University of Illinois Extension on the state’s Centennial Soil Archive at 18:00 on Tuesday, March 12, 2024. This program will explore the significant changes in Illinois soil over the past century, utilizing samples collected during the state’s initial soil surveys that commenced in 1899.
Researchers collected soil samples from various fields to a depth of three feet, storing them at the University of Illinois’ Urbana-Champaign campus. This extensive archive now serves as a vital resource for scientists studying the effects of farming practices and climate change on soil health.
Understanding Soil Change and Community Involvement
The presentation will not only outline historical findings but also discuss current resampling efforts throughout Illinois. Attendees will learn how they can actively participate in these initiatives, contributing to ongoing research aimed at understanding soil dynamics in their local environments.
