Pacekids Hosts Open House to Mark International Day of Education
Pacekids, a Calgary-based organization dedicated to supporting children with diverse needs, hosted an open house on March 2, 2024, in celebration of the International Day of Education. This family-friendly event welcomed visitors to tour the facility, engage with the therapy team, and explore specialized learning areas tailored for children requiring additional support.
The event featured interactive activities for children and informative sessions regarding Early Childhood Services (ECS) enrollment for the upcoming 2026-2027 school year. Attendees had the opportunity to visit various specialized spaces, including classrooms, a gym, sensory rooms, and therapeutic areas, all designed to foster inclusive learning environments.
Connecting with Families and Professionals
During the open house, families connected with teachers, Classroom Therapy Aides, and a multidisciplinary team of professionals, including speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and behaviour specialists. These experts provide essential support directly within the classrooms, ensuring that each child’s unique needs are met.
Torey Perez, the clinical manager at Pacekids, emphasized the organization’s commitment to promoting learning among children with varying diagnoses, such as autism, cerebral palsy, and Down Syndrome. “Our goal is to promote their learning in a way that is best suited for them,” Perez stated, highlighting the importance of individualized support.
Pacekids currently assists approximately 600 families with a range of programs that offer comprehensive family support. According to Perez, the organization has expanded its capacity by about 20 percent in recent years, allowing them to reach more children in need.
Importance of Early Intervention
The significance of early intervention cannot be understated, particularly for children diagnosed with developmental challenges. Perez noted that early support is crucial for aiding in speech and language development, fostering peer relationships, and enhancing social skills. “These are key years for gross motor and fine motor skills,” she added. “We are really building a foundation to help them excel as they continue to grow.”

The open house served not only as a celebration of education but also as a vital opportunity for families to connect with resources that can significantly impact their children’s development.
