The University of Saskatchewan (USask) has officially welcomed students back to campus as Vince Bruni-Bossio assumes the role of president. This event marks a significant moment for the university, as it emphasizes its commitment to fostering a vibrant academic community while addressing contemporary challenges.
Emphasizing Community and Research Excellence
Situated on Treaty 6 Territory and the Homeland of the Métis, USask is a proud member of U15 Canada, representing some of the nation’s foremost research-intensive universities. The institution consistently ranks among the leading universities worldwide, highlighting its dedication to research and global impact. Bruni-Bossio expressed gratitude to the entire USask community, acknowledging the crucial roles played by students, faculty, and staff since the university’s establishment in 1907.
With students hailing from 130 countries, USask has cultivated a diverse learning environment on its main campus in Saskatoon and through various programs offered throughout the province. The faculty and staff are recognized for their innovative thinking and commitment to advancing research that not only enhances education but also contributes to societal development.
Strategic Planning for the Future
As the university navigates a changing political, social, and financial landscape, Bruni-Bossio stressed the importance of collaboration in formulating a new strategic plan. This plan will aim to clarify USask’s identity, grounded in its values and sense of place, while outlining shared goals that showcase the university’s value to Saskatchewan, Canada, and the global community.
The strategic plan will leverage USask’s robust research enterprise, which is supported by a unique cluster of research infrastructure and expertise. This initiative is expected to enhance the university’s contributions to addressing complex global challenges, reinforcing its reputation as a leader in research excellence.
Bruni-Bossio also affirmed a commitment to prioritizing the experiences of students. He reassured them that USask is dedicated to providing comprehensive support throughout their academic journeys. Students can access a variety of resources aimed at fostering their success, including assistance with academics, finance, health, wellness, and technology. As USask looks to the future, the university aims to cultivate an inclusive and collaborative culture. Bruni-Bossio emphasized the importance of creating a community where every member feels empowered to contribute to collective success. He wishes everyone a happy and healthy new year and looks forward to engaging with the USask community throughout 2026.
