University of Victoria Rises in Rankings as Top Research Institution
The University of Victoria (UVic) has been recognized as one of Canada’s leading research institutions, securing the 18th position in the latest rankings released by Research Infosource Inc. for 2024. This marks a notable improvement, as UVic has climbed two spots from its previous ranking in 2023.
The ranking highlights UVic’s impressive sponsored research income, which reached $168 million in 2024, reflecting a significant increase of 20.3 percent compared to the prior year. This income encompasses all external funding received to support research, including grants and contracts. Furthermore, UVic achieved the top position in the comprehensive ranking for faculty research intensity, with an average of $215,900 per faculty member.

According to Research Infosource Inc., the overall faculty research intensity across Canadian universities saw an increase of 2.9 percent in fiscal 2024 compared to the previous year. The data also indicates a rise in total government funding for research in Canada, which increased by three percent to $6.21 billion. Notably, total non-government funding surged by 7.8 percent, reaching $3.85 billion.
In this competitive landscape, the University of Toronto maintained its position at the top of the rankings, followed closely by Université de Montréal and McGill University. Within British Columbia, the University of British Columbia ranked fourth, while UVic was positioned at 18th, with Simon Fraser University and the University of Northern British Columbia following in 19th and 39th places, respectively.
