USask Unveils Marcoux Leadership Program to Cultivate Future Leaders
The University of Saskatchewan (USask) has announced the launch of the Marcoux Leadership Program, designed to equip upper-year students with essential leadership skills. This initiative, made possible through a generous contribution of CAD $1 million from alumni Russel Marcoux (BA’73) and his wife, Bonnie Marcoux, aims to integrate leadership principles into the university’s curriculum.
Vince Bruni-Bossio, USask President and Vice-Chancellor, expressed gratitude towards the Marcoux family for their significant support. “Their vision reflects a shared commitment to preparing future graduates who will guide their organizations and communities thoughtfully and effectively,” he stated. The program is expected to shape leaders capable of addressing the challenges and opportunities of an evolving world.
The Marcoux family has a strong connection to Saskatchewan, with Russel and Bonnie being passionate advocates for community and industry development. They founded the Yanke Group of Companies and have a history of supporting progress within the province. Their substantial gift will fund scholarships, program development, and hands-on learning experiences.
In a joint statement, Russel and Bonnie Marcoux stressed their belief that leadership principles should be accessible to all students. “The skills and knowledge gained from this exposure will better equip and influence their abilities in their future endeavors,” they said.
Program Details and Structure
The Marcoux Leadership Program will feature a one-week intensive course scheduled for May 4-8, 2026. This program will introduce students to various leadership practices and frameworks while engaging them in team-based projects and real-world challenges. Participants will explore different leadership styles, enhance their communication and decision-making skills, and foster self-reflection necessary for personal growth as leaders.
Third-year marketing student Shreevalli Khaneja believes the program presents a valuable opportunity for students to develop confidence and leadership skills early in their academic careers. “Leadership is a powerful skill to learn early. With access to classes and tools through the Marcoux Leadership Program, more students will have the confidence to step up and take charge,” she remarked. Khaneja emphasized the importance of cultivating a growth mindset among emerging professionals.
Dr. Keith Willoughby, Dean of the Edwards School of Business, noted the program’s significance in providing students with immersive learning experiences. “Their support makes it possible for USask students to participate in an immersive learning experience that strengthens their confidence, sharpens their leadership skills, and prepares them to become the leaders the world needs,” he stated, highlighting the program’s alignment with fostering essential leadership abilities.
Applications for the Marcoux Leadership Program are currently open, with a deadline set for February 13, 2026. Interested students can learn more and apply by visiting the USask Edwards School of Business website. This new initiative not only underscores USask’s commitment to leadership education but also aims to empower the next generation of leaders in Saskatchewan and beyond.
