Victoria Firms Launch Initiative to Revitalize Indigenous Languages
Two companies based in Victoria, Canada, have announced a partnership aimed at revitalizing Indigenous languages across the nation. On December 10, 2023, Language Foundry and Remarkable Communications revealed their collaboration, which seeks to enhance language preservation efforts by utilizing innovative digital tools.
Language Foundry specializes in developing customizable online language courses tailored to the needs of Indigenous communities. The platform collaborates with community members—including Elders, artists, and fluent speakers—to create authentic educational content, comprising both art and audio resources. Importantly, each community retains ownership of its materials and data, ensuring cultural integrity and respect.
The platform is currently in use by over 300 teachers and 40 school boards, reaching more than 10,000 students in Canada and the United States. “Language is a vessel for culture and identity,” stated Chad Quinn, CEO of Language Foundry. “With one language going quiet every 14 days, we know we are in a race against time. We wanted to create a tool that communities can use to reduce the burden on speakers and teachers while digitizing knowledge for future generations.”
Remarkable Communications brings expertise in digital storytelling, focusing on projects that are rooted in Indigenous knowledge systems. Since its inception in 2019, the organization has supported over 1,000 projects with the goal of amplifying Indigenous voices and narratives. “This partnership is about increasing support for Indigenous communities in leading their own revitalization work, without added burden,” explained Laurel Anne Stark, spokesperson for Remarkable Communications.
The collaboration between these two organizations aims to expand access to community-driven language education and communication tools. By prioritizing Indigenous self-determination, they hope to foster a sustainable environment for language revitalization efforts.
As Indigenous languages face increasing threats, partnerships like this one are crucial. The initiative not only seeks to preserve linguistic heritage but also to empower communities to take charge of their own cultural narratives. This approach ensures that the languages and the knowledge they carry will be available for future generations, preserving the rich tapestry of Indigenous cultures across Canada.
Through their combined efforts, Language Foundry and Remarkable Communications are setting a precedent for how technology can intersect with cultural preservation, offering a model for similar initiatives worldwide. The focus remains on collaboration, respect, and the fundamental belief that language is essential to identity and community.
