Kendall County Health Department Sets Priorities for Next Five Years

The **Kendall County Health Department** has established its health priorities for the next five years, focusing on behavioral health, substance abuse, food security, and maternal and child health. This decision follows extensive public engagement, including a community survey aimed at residents and workers in **Kendall County**, which was instrumental in shaping the department’s **Community Health Improvement Plan** (CHIP).

Every certified health department in Illinois is required to develop a three- to five-year CHIP, referred to locally as the **Illinois Project for Local Area Needs** (IPLAN). The recent survey results were shared during the **Community Health Summit Breakfast**, where nearly 500 participants provided their insights. According to **RaeAnn VanGundy**, Executive Director of the health department, the response rate was aligned with their goals. “That was our goal,” she stated. “We wish we could have exceeded that.”

In addition to the survey, the health department conducted a **Community Partner Assessment Event** in July 2023, gathering local leaders and organizations to discuss health issues and actions to mitigate health inequities. Approximately 80 attendees contributed to the dialogue, highlighting a broad spectrum of concerns.

The insights gained from both the community survey and the assessment event will guide the department’s priorities for **2021-2026**. Key objectives include connecting vulnerable populations to resources that alleviate socio-economic stress, promoting mental health initiatives, and raising community awareness about vector-borne diseases.

Vector-borne diseases, which can be transmitted by ticks and mosquitoes, pose significant health risks, including **Lyme disease** and **West Nile virus**. The health department aims to increase awareness and protective measures within the community as part of its broader strategy.

These priorities reflect a concerted effort to improve public health and address pressing community needs. The Kendall County Health Department remains committed to engaging with local residents and organizations to effectively implement its plan and foster a healthier environment for all.
