Flu activity has significantly increased across Illinois, impacting Grundy County, where Morris Hospital reported a surge in admissions. From December 21-27, 2023, the hospital recorded 167 flu cases, more than double the 72 cases reported the previous week. This trend aligns with data from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), which indicated that statewide flu-related hospital admissions also doubled during the same period.

During the week of December 21-27, flu cases accounted for 10% of emergency room visits at Morris Hospital, exceeding the statewide average of 8%. In the following week, from December 28, 2023January 3, 2024, the proportion of flu admissions dropped to 4.5%, with Morris Hospital recording 33 new patients with flu symptoms.

Flu Positivity Rate and Demographic Insights

The positivity rate for flu testing at Morris Hospital reached an alarming 38%, indicating that a significant number of individuals tested were infected. Dr. Anthony Leazzo, Chief Medical Officer at Morris Hospital, emphasized the importance of hygiene, urging the public to wash their hands frequently to mitigate the risks of transmission. He noted that respiratory viruses can be picked up from common surfaces, increasing the likelihood of infection.

Demographic data from the IDPH highlights that the most affected group consists of children aged 5 to 17, who represent 29.9% of all acute respiratory admissions. Alarmingly, only 15% of these children have received the flu vaccine. The next most impacted demographic is adults aged 65 and older, accounting for 7% of flu-related admissions, with over 47% in this age group having been vaccinated.

Preventative Measures and Treatment Recommendations

Dr. Leazzo pointed out that fluctuating temperatures can strain the immune system. He advised that individuals should prepare for cold weather and maintain good health practices, including adequate rest and nutrition. “It’s 50 one day and 20 the next day, and it’s going down into the teens or even lower at night. These big swings in temperature really wreak havoc on your body’s immune system,” he explained.

For those experiencing flu symptoms, Dr. Leazzo emphasized that since the flu is a viral infection, antibiotics are ineffective. Instead, he recommends symptom control through medications such as Tylenol and ibuprofen, alongside hydration with drinks like Gatorade and Pedialyte to replenish electrolytes. Home remedies, including chicken soup, are also validated for their comforting and restorative effects.

Despite the flu’s aggressive spread, vaccination rates remain low. Only 21.9% of Illinois residents had received the flu vaccine as of late November, a decrease of 4% compared to the previous year. Additionally, only 5% had received the updated COVID-19 vaccination, reflecting a concerning trend in public health compliance.

As flu season progresses, health officials continue to highlight the importance of vaccination and preventive measures. The time to act remains critical as communities work together to combat this seasonal virus effectively.
