New Clinic Opens in Dieppe for Children Under 5 Without Doctors

A new clinic specifically for children under five who lack a family doctor officially opened in Dieppe on Monday. This facility aims to serve approximately 2,000 children within the Beauséjour health zone, as reported by the Vitalité Health Network. The health zone encompasses Greater Moncton and extends from Richibucto to Sackville.

The newly established clinic will conduct comprehensive assessments focusing on growth, weight, head circumference, and various aspects of development, including motor, cognitive, and social skills. In addition to these evaluations, the clinic will monitor children’s eating, sleeping, and hygiene habits. As outlined in a recent press release, the clinic will address common health concerns such as fever, cough, ear infections, respiratory issues, rashes, digestive disorders, and conjunctivitis. Furthermore, it will provide ongoing care for chronic conditions like asthma, eczema, and allergies.

Stéphanie Roy, vice-president of health and community services for Vitalité, emphasized the clinic’s importance in filling a gap for families. “When a newborn is discharged from the hospital without a family doctor, they can be referred to the clinic by the hospital doctor,” she explained. Roy added that if parents contact the clinic without a referral, the staff will ensure a referral is arranged for those families.

Prior to the clinic’s opening, similar services were available through N.B. Health Link. However, Roy noted that integrating this service under the Vitalité umbrella enhances coordination with existing healthcare teams. “We expect to match these children with local family health teams as they reach the age of five, ensuring they have continuous access to primary care,” she stated.

This initiative represents a significant step forward in addressing healthcare access for young children in the region, providing essential services and support to families in need. As the clinic begins operations, it is poised to make a meaningful difference in the health outcomes of the youngest members of the Beauséjour community.
