Peter Lougheed Centre Expansion Adds 97 New Beds to Hospital

A significant expansion of the Peter Lougheed Centre in northeast Calgary has officially concluded, adding 97 new beds to the facility. The $151 million development marks a crucial enhancement in healthcare capacity, according to the provincial government. During a media briefing at the centre on February 24, 2024, officials outlined the benefits of the expansion, which also includes space for 28 emergency department beds and upgraded clinical areas aimed at improving patient flow.

Martin Long, Alberta’s Minister of Infrastructure, emphasized the importance of the expansion in enhancing patient and staff experiences. He stated, “Stronger communities are built in strong infrastructure. And health-care infrastructure is one of the most important investments we can make.” With the completion of this project, the Peter Lougheed Centre will accommodate a total of 159 beds, including four training beds.

The hospital expansion is part of a broader initiative by the province, which has committed $25 million to upgrade healthcare services across Alberta, particularly in emergency care. Officials are already working on recruiting healthcare professionals to support the increased capacity at the centre.

In a related announcement, the Alberta provincial government revealed a $2 million investment aimed at expanding the in-patient tower at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. This project is expected to add 42 acute care beds and 10 mental health care beds, representing a 32 percent increase in capacity, according to Matt Jones, Minister for Hospitals and Surgical Health Services. The Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation is matching this investment to support the construction of a new research centre at the hospital.

The provincial government also plans to add more than 1,000 new beds across health-care facilities in Edmonton and Calgary as part of its new acute care action plan. This long-term strategy includes the development of a 50-year capital plan to ensure staff and workforce capacity aligns with the province’s growing population.

Jones highlighted additional investments, stating, “We have invested $15 million in planning to build eight urgent care centres across Alberta,” along with $5 million over two years to enhance health services funding in the region. He emphasized that these efforts aim to ensure timely care for patients while providing healthcare professionals with the necessary facilities to deliver quality care.

The expansion of the Peter Lougheed Centre, alongside other healthcare initiatives, underscores the Alberta government’s commitment to strengthening its health-care infrastructure to meet the needs of its population.
