Illinois Democrats Reflect on Year of Turmoil Under Trump

CHICAGO — As President Donald Trump completes his first year of a second term, Illinois Democrats are voicing concerns regarding what they describe as a year of chaos marked by unfulfilled promises and civil rights infringements. During a news conference on March 15, 2025, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul characterized the past year as “365 days of chaos, 365 days of attacks upon civil rights, on the rule of law and on the Constitution itself.”

Raoul emphasized his commitment to defend the Constitution, stating, “I will not be deterred or intimidated, even if it means defending the rule of law from attacks by our own federal government.” His remarks highlight a broader sentiment among Illinois Democrats regarding the impact of federal policies on state residents.

Governor JB Pritzker, who celebrated his 61st birthday on March 14, hosted a series of meetings with business leaders and community members to discuss how Trump’s policies have affected their lives. Over the past year, Pritzker has emerged as a vocal critic of the Trump administration, initiating numerous public events to rally support for Democratic initiatives.

“People started paying attention to the things that I was saying, which was a bit surprising to me, but it was a result of no one else really saying it as bluntly as I was,” Pritzker remarked, reflecting on his role as a counter to Trump’s policies.

Legal Battles Against Federal Policies

In response to Trump’s initiatives, Raoul’s office has filed a remarkable 51 lawsuits over the past year, averaging nearly one lawsuit each week. These legal challenges have included actions against federal agencies such as Customs and Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, as well as efforts to block the deployment of National Guard troops.

Among the significant achievements, Raoul secured a nationwide temporary restraining order against a Trump executive order that sought to end birthright citizenship. Raoul noted that these lawsuits have collectively protected over $6.6 billion in funding for essential state programs and services.

He expressed a personal connection to many of these legal actions, stating, “As a proud son of Haitian immigrants, born at the time that my mother was not yet naturalized, I am a birthright citizen.” Raoul highlighted the emotional toll on his team, stating, “We are standing our ground to defend the rights of the people of Illinois and the rule of law, and we’re winning in the courts.”

Collaboration with Other States

Raoul also mentioned the importance of collaboration among state attorneys general, noting that about two dozen of them communicate regularly to coordinate their legal strategies. This cooperation has been critical in addressing the challenges posed by the federal administration.

Community Impact and Uncertainty

At Pritzker’s event, community leaders expressed concerns about the uncertainty stemming from the Trump administration’s policies. Health care providers and social service organizations have been particularly affected by funding cuts, leading to a loss of vital resources for vulnerable populations.

“It’s upsetting, and we’re all going to have to be in this together to ensure we send the message,” Pritzker remarked, emphasizing the need for bipartisan support to address the ongoing challenges. He lamented the unpredictability of federal funding, stating, “It often depends on what side of the bed someone wakes up on in the morning in Washington.”

Pritzker criticized Trump for failing to fulfill campaign promises aimed at enhancing the lives of ordinary citizens. He referenced Illinois’ minimum wage increase to $15, noting that even this amount is no longer sufficient for many families.

In contrast, the Illinois Republican Party asserted that the past year has been prosperous for the state, attributing improvements such as a decline in the national murder rate to Trump’s leadership. They stated, “Illinois, and the United States, is stronger, safer, and more prosperous.”
