Robotic Surgery Revolutionizes Orthopaedic Care at RVH
Significant advancements in orthopaedic surgery are being introduced at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) in Ontario, Canada. On January 19, 2024, the health centre will launch robotic-assisted orthopaedic surgery, beginning with knee replacements. The innovative technology aims to enhance patient care by improving the accuracy and consistency of surgical procedures.
The robotic system, known as ROSA, which stands for RObotic Surgical Assistant, will serve as a support tool during surgeries. Importantly, surgeons will maintain full control throughout the procedure. The robotic assistance is designed to provide real-time guidance and detailed imaging, helping surgeons to create tailored surgical plans for each patient.
This new approach promises numerous benefits, including more precise implant placement and alignment, reduced post-operative pain, improved mobility, and a quicker recovery time for patients. RVH anticipates that approximately 400 out of the 1,400 hip and knee replacements performed annually will utilize this cutting-edge technology.
Advancements in Joint Replacement Procedures
The initial phase of the program will utilize the Zimmer Biomet ROSA® Knee System for total knee replacements. Following this, the Stryker Mako SmartRobotics™ system will be introduced in late February, enabling partial knee replacements and later extending to total knee and hip replacements.
Dr. Ryan Perlus, an orthopaedic surgeon at RVH, highlighted the transformative potential of robotic assistance in joint replacement procedures. “Joint replacement surgery can be life-changing for people who have lived for years with pain and limited mobility,” he stated. “Robotic assistance allows us to tailor each procedure to the individual by using personalized surgical plans and real-time guidance to support safe, precise and consistent outcomes, while keeping the surgeon firmly in control.”
Community Support and Future Implications
RVH also emphasized that not all patients requiring joint replacements will necessarily benefit from robotic assistance. Nevertheless, the centre is committed to providing traditional surgical options alongside this new technology.
Gail Hunt, President and CEO of RVH, expressed pride in the health centre’s commitment to innovation. “This is a meaningful step forward in the type of technology we use and how we continue to innovate and advance care for patients across our region,” she said. Hunt noted that as the demand for orthopaedic surgery continues to grow in the expanding community, this program will ensure patients have access to precise, personalized, state-of-the-art care close to home.
The introduction of robotic surgery at RVH has been fully funded by community donations, underscoring the vital role of local support in advancing healthcare services. Without these contributions, the implementation of such technology would not have been possible, marking a significant milestone in the delivery of orthopaedic care in the region.
