Robotic-Assisted Surgery Launches at Royal Victoria Health Centre

Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) is set to enhance its orthopaedic surgery offerings with the launch of robotic-assisted procedures beginning on January 19, 2024. The introduction of robotic technology aims to improve patient outcomes for knee and hip replacements, with the first operation utilizing this innovative approach scheduled for the same day.

The robotic system, known as the ROSA® Knee System, stands for RObotic Surgical Assistant. RVH emphasizes that while the robot assists during the surgery, the surgeon retains complete control over the process. This collaboration between human expertise and robotic precision is designed to improve accuracy and consistency in surgical procedures.

Benefits of Robotic Assistance in Surgery

Robotic assistance offers numerous advantages for patients undergoing knee and hip replacements. The technology facilitates more precise implant placement and alignment, potentially leading to enhanced mobility and a quicker recovery period. Additionally, patients can expect a less painful experience following surgery, which is a significant consideration for those who have previously endured chronic pain and limited mobility.

According to Dr. Ryan Perlus, an orthopaedic surgeon at RVH, “Joint replacement surgery can be life-changing for people who have lived for years with pain and limited mobility. Robotic assistance allows us to tailor each procedure to the individual by using personalized surgical plans and real-time guidance to support safe, precise and consistent outcomes, while keeping the surgeon firmly in control.”

Initially, the program will focus on total knee replacements before expanding to include partial knee replacements and total hip replacements later in February 2024 with the introduction of the Stryker Mako SmartRoboticsTM system.

Community Support Fuels Innovation

RVH anticipates that approximately 400 of its projected 1,400 knee and hip replacements will utilize robotic assistance. The health centre acknowledges that not all patients will require or benefit from this technology, but it offers an advanced option for those who do. Traditional surgical methods remain a viable choice for patients.

As demand for orthopaedic surgery continues to grow in our rapidly expanding community, this program ensures patients can access precise, personalized, state-of-the-art care close to home, delivered by highly skilled teams and supported by an incredibly generous community.”

The funding for the robotic systems was made possible through community donations, highlighting the collaborative effort to enhance healthcare services at RVH. Without this support, the introduction of such advanced technology would not have been feasible.
